[Earthsea] by mewhaku

“This is. And thou art. There is no safety. There is no end. The word must be heard in silence. There must be darkness to see the stars. The dance is always danced above the hollow place, above the terrible abyss.”
― Ursula K. Le Guin, The Farthest Shore

Ursula K. Le Guin passed today at age 88.
And that really, really sucks. For many reasons.

Her works have honestly been the "stuff" keeping me going for awhile. Through some really rough times. Continuously, offering some hope really.

I first read the Earthsea series after seeing the (not-so-good) Ghibli animated adaptation. Oddly, my mother, a huge fan, had somehow never shown me the books while growing up... but I loved them, thrived on them. So had she. Without influence from my mom, I had come to love them too.

The Farthest Shore (3rd Earthsea novel) comforted me at a point in my life where death was a close fear, for my loved ones, and a deep fear of life had come over me too, then. That was around 2010 maybe, 2011? 7-8 years ago now. I had been reading the books right around the time I made the image I linked above and below.

I've read many more of her pieces, her essays, her non-fiction, hell I've written my 'mini-thesis' for my English Bachelor's back in 2015 on Earthsea.
I've kept stringing along the name Yevaud for awhile now too... the dragon in the first book of Earthsea's name.

There was something so critical to how she wrote, and spoke - on most topics, but fantasy most of all.
She's driven me immensely in my inspiration and at the heart of where I want to go art wise. Creativity wise.
I'm really going to miss her, and it honestly really hurts right now.

HECK even my Paralogos species sortof began as a following vein of the idea of Logos, true language, true names... true names being the "Stuff" of Earthsea. The True Language. That's been something of a love letter to those themes.

If you haven't read anything from her- please do take a look. That is really the best treat you can give yourself.

I felt it was necessary for me to write this, considering she has been so near and dear to me creatively-speaking.
I'd like to make a tribute piece, sometime... but not right now.

I had always meant to write to her- she was known to respond back, but I've missed that chance.

Thank you too to any/all of my friends and watchers here for being around during my own artistic journey. I do hope that some of the feelings and thoughts that have inspired me through her works have come through in what I've made. I'm going to keep going, of course, time moves on, but this still sucks.
