Stone Troll Symphony

By
In Norway these little piles of stones on top of mountains are called Trolls. Whoever climbs a mountain usually leaves one there, according to the local custom. It's believed that at nights the Trolls come alive, dance on the mountains and do whatever else Trolls are supposed to do, only to turn to stone again with coming of sunrise.

EDIT: a couple of corrections to my story:

I thought I should tell u that piles of stone like that is called a 'Varde' where I come from in Norway and according to my historybook its was built to keep the trolls away when people camped for the night, it was supposed to scre them away.. but ur version might be right also, many versions of these things.

Even though some trolls are rumored to be made out of stone, they don't really come back to life at night, they just die and turn into stone when the sun shines on them. There are tales about whole mountains once being trolls that somehow didn't manage to hide before the sun rose and killed them, but none are as small as that, or built up of separate stones. Some mountains or small islands are even supposed to have been objects that trolls have lost and that also have turned into stone. The reason for these tales are that when people in earlier times didn't have science to rely on, they'd make up tales to explain the reason for things they wondered about.

What your picture shows is called a 'varde', it is sort of a beacon (like the ones between Gondor and Rohan in The Lord of the Rings). They were used as signaling systems (people lit a fire there, and it was visible for miles and miles) back in earlier stages of society, and there has never been anything mythical about them.

Other people also reported similar traditions in UK, Canada, Spain and Switzerland...

Also Hawaii claimed to have a prehuman race of squatty people who had to avoid sunlight lest ...

One rock formation was said to had been a queen and her entourage who stayed too long in building some causeway, paused to observe their handiwork -and the sun came up...

Such a beautiful picture. Was this at dawn or dusk? Looks like the sun is low on the horizon.
Just curious.

Can I use this as a background? Don't want to do anything with the picture that you wouldn't approve of.

You can do anything you want with this picture, I wouldn't mind :)

Love your "trolls" I have always refered to them as Inukshuks. I always leave one on my travels, especially in the mountains (have a few in my gallery) Here they are to mark a path that has been taken before and to help guide the next person down that path ona safe journey. The First nations people sometimes used them as other types of markers (depending on they shape they are built) and can mean food, or even a memorial spot. No matter what they are called they are wonderful and I am always happy to see them in others galleries

That really seems like a sight only seen in a dream. One of those 'once in a lifetime' moments everyone hopes to capture, but few ever do. :-) The colors and composition blow me away and the creative title and framing really pulls it all together. Awesome work and congrats on the DD. :boogie:

Thank you! Still, I hope it's not a 'once in a lifetime' thing - I plan to see and capture many more amazing stuff :)
Funny how this view didn't really look all that super-special (hard to believe, I know) until I actually seen the picture on my PC...

Breathtaking. I would love to sit and see this place with my own eyes, as you were lucky enough to do. :)

Great capture.

That right there is called a "varde", which is explained in this comment, and I don't want to seem like a total idiot, but I'd really appreciate if you'd edit the description to tell what it "really" is, cause I've never heard of anyone call them trolls ^^;
Or if you don't delete the part about it being a troll, just.... include the fact about some people referring to it as a "varde" aswell.
Sorry if this comment seemed rude or anything, I just wanted to tell you what I've been told about and read about trolls :)

That's a nice addition, thank you. Would you mind if I include it to the description for the picture? I'll leave mine too and just add a couple of alternatives :)
