To Weather the Storm in a Skiff Made of Paper

June 28, 1776 The first thing Eleanor noticed was the sun. After two weeks inside Bridewell, daylight struck her eyes with almost physical force. She squinted as the guards marched her through the prison doors, blinking against a brightness her eyes had almost forgotten they could tolerate. The city followed close behind it: wagon wheels against the streets, horses, voices, hammering, smoke and cooking food, human beings who had apparently enjoyed the luxury of bathing sometime in the last fortnight. Fresh air had never seemed so offensively loud. Eleanor drew a deep breath as best she could manage and immediately regretted having a better nose than most. Preferable to the shit-bucket in the cell. Her wrists were bound behind her back. Her boots had not been returned, nor had her weapons, blood flasks, coat, hat or anything else the prison had taken from her. The Tsunami Rises

Early in the morning of April 1st, 1946 the Scotch Cap Lighthouse, on Unimak Island, Alaska, five men were on duty at about 2:18 AM after an earthquake violently shook their station for approximately 30 seconds about an hour previously. The men were understandably on edge, being in a 5-story structure on a bluff some 40 feet above the sea as they were. About 27 minutes later an aftershock hit, and the officer on watch at the lighthouse that night was trying to make contact via radio with Dutch Harbor to get more information, when a wall of seawater went over all 40 feet of the bluff, and practically swallowed the island whole. When the Coast Guard arrived the next morning they found nothing aside from debris, with only the foundation still there to prove that a lighthouse once stood, and aside from a few scattered pieces of human remains the crew was never recovered. The Scotch Cap Lighthouse and its occupants were destroyed by a tsunami, which is the term for waves

The Mad God's Bargain

In her dreams, she feels warmth. Not metaphorical, nor emotional. Physical. Skin that can stand beneath the sun without protection. Blood that still flows through her veins to the tempo of a beating heart. Lungs that pull in the smell of dust, paper, and the sharp sting of ozone from recent spellcasting. The place is beautiful in the way a closely held secret is beautiful: too clean, too still, too carefully managed. The structure rises before her eyes like an immaculate thought—pale stone, banners that do not stir, books that whisper from their shelves. Lauriel recognizes this place. She steps through the archway, shoulders squared, chin lifted, because she earned this. She brought this place back into existence with her own hands—her own will, her own stubborn refusal to die on schedule. She still tastes cold marble and distant screams from the last place she stood when she swore, Not yet. Not me. Her fingers tighten around the tome tucked under her arm, bound in leather as
