The Ravenwatch Canticle
There are stories that belong to one kingdom, one age, one world. This is not one of them.
I have heard the names of Lauriel and Vesna Ravenwatch spoken beneath unfamiliar stars, whispered in ruined castles, cursed by gods and monsters, and remembered by those whose lives they touched, and their descendants.
One built houses where the hunted might find shelter. The other opened roads when no shelter could be reached. Mother and daughter. Vampire and dhampir. Countess and pirate. They crossed worlds, buried friends, defied gods, toppled tyrants, and discovered—as all immortals must—that surviving history is easier than living with it.
Not every tale told of them is true. But truth, dear reader, is a rather more complicated thing than fact. So come. The road is long, the night longer still, and there are many stories yet to tell, and I, Shahrizad, can alone tell this one.
Here, now, is the Ravenwatch Canticle...
