Description
"Let the river which soothed our feet overflow its banks
as tears do that swell and rush across my dusty cheeks.
Let the clouds and stars race swiftly with you into death.
Let the rain that makes us dream
tell the story of your life tonight.
Who mourns for you now, Brother?
Everyone who knew you does."
From the Epic of Gilgamesh. You can read the rest of his lament and the translation of the tablets here [link] it brings tears to my eyes.
Here's a butchered synopsis for you! Gilgamesh was a semi divine hero/king of Uruk. The epic starts off like most epics do, with heroic feats and all. Then when Gilgamesh's enemy turned best-friend, Enkidu dies (punishment of the gods) things change. Gilgamesh is absolutely devastated! He orders everyone to mourn his dead friend, statues are erected in his memory etc etc. Doesn't bury his body and stays by his side till umm, as Wikipedia says... a maggot fell from Enkidu's nose. Thereafter he sets off on a quest for immortality.
I think what's most touching about this epic is that even super-strong heroes crumble when a loved one perishes. It has a special place in my heart.

And now for another epic! Me vs the horrible paper! I absolutely destroyed this painting half way through. By some mysterious forces (procrastination? an excuse not do other work!) I managed to persevere and now... it's kind of presentable. I tried illustrating another scene [link] some time back but messed up! So I really didn't want to mess up again.
Omnomnom, I hope it doesn't look like he's eating his hand??
Eh, anyway, this painting makes me uneasy for multiple reasons (technical and emotional). But I still feel like sharing it.
Sorry about the text wall
