Hi, welcome! I am Merel van Eck and live in the region of Eindhoven in the Netherlands, with my boyfriend and our dear furbaby ‘Mr Salem’. I grew up together with my older sister and was raised by very sweet and lovely parents. In 2014 I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Communication at the Fontys Hogeschool in Eindhoven. A few years after my study I had the chance to discover myself and to gain some experience within the workfield and beyond, but unfortunately my health played parts. After four heavy years and a massive medical trajectory with lots of hospital stays and dialysis, I received a kidney in 2020 from a very sweet and special kidney donor whom I knew from my former work at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. Also the transplant trajectory wasn’t without many heavy challenges, but after some time now it seems that my situation has finally stabilized. I used to be very active with sports and dancing, especially classical ballet and Irish Dancing were and still are a big passion of mine. When I wasn’t physically able to do anything, I was often watching videos in the hospital of painters like Bob Ross and Kevin Hill. I admire them for how they can make oil painting and learning how to do this, an activity that is approachable to anybody. I am very grateful for them that they did this. It’s really an experience to go with them through the painting and it also works very good as a calming therapy. Also my father is a very big inspiration to me, he can really make very detailed themes with oil paint on the canvas and I absolutely admire him for this! In the past I have painted every now and then, but back then I never had the patience to really get into the painting techniques and to improve myself. In 2020 I luckily rediscovered my passion for painting and I share my paintings with others, to show them what I recently made and to share tips. I learn myself painting with help of tutorials and videos on Youtube and other channels. I strive for improvement in my painting techniques and creating my own style. I believe that if you have a passion for something and you really want to learn something, you’ll get there. Recently I started working at the Foundation of Disinherited Goods (Stichting Onterfd Goed) as a marketing & communications professional. The Foundation of Disinherited Goods is trying to find new homes for artworks and other objects that are often coming from museum depots. It’s such a waste to let them dust away in a depot or on someone’s attic, while they can shine again on someone’s wall at home! I really like this initiative and it is something that I therefore really support and put in a lot of energy and passion. I also really stand for sustainability and trying to make my ecological footprint as small as possible wherever I can. I’m trying to do this by eating most of the time vegan food and at any time vegetarian when vegan isn’t possible. I use stuff, materials and clothes in a durable way and try to reuse them and pay attention to where they come from. Animal welfare is very important to me. I absolutely love animals and nature, I can really enjoy nature that is still pure and untouched by men. This you will see in my artworks; fairytale like, lovely landscapes and scenery that puts you into a fantasy world. Whenever I have new artworks, I will place them on my website and on Deviantart. Next to that, you can also follow me on my social media, where I share my art journey and the stories of Mr Salem:
If you have any questions or if you are interested in my paintings, please contact me. My paintings are for sale for a small price to get the material costs back and to be able to make new paintings in the future. To me, it’s already a great honor to have my painting on your wall. Hopefully I’ll see you soon!
