Vendel Age period design based on a drawing I made some years ago - see original here: fav.me/d6lo3ji
Based on original Germanic art from the Migration Era, Merovingian and Vendel Age. These birds often are depicted on brooches and shield ornaments. Contrary to popular belief these are not ravens but most propably eagles, hawks, or falcons, as can be seen by their curved beaks. Although Germanic and later Viking age art styles are heavily ornamentalized, later Viking Age birds usually sport straight beaks like ravens do. In the times preceding the Viking Age, Odin/Woden more often is depicted with different birds, and the eagle like the wolf and the raven is one of his animal companions.
