It has been a week since the night of nights. Jack o'Lanterns rot on the lawn, their carved teeth curling inward as their faces slowly warp into hideous mockeries of the works of art they once were. The moon wanes, the cauldrons are empty, the witches have flown away, and the trash is filled with the remains of candy-fueled debauchery.

But it is not over. Halloween does not end. It waits.

Many thanks to all of you who entered, donated prizes, offered to judge or simply spread the word about the All Hallow's Tales Literature Contest. It's been quite a ride, filled with treats and tricks alike.

As loath as I am to bid farewell to the season, you've waited long enough. With a heartfelt thanks to the judges who labored over 58 entries, I give you the...

The Skull, A Love Story by orphicfiddler
The Skull: A Love StoryBuried beneath a debris of odds and ends - discarded carnival masks, willow patterned tea cups, toothless combs, and mauled little clown dolls - a curve of yellowed ivory, like an old woman's tooth, peeped. Smoothly translucent, surprisingly so, and he wondered if a bit of bleach upon an old toothbrush might not wear off the yellow sheen and convert it to a gleaming alabaster, like a bust of Nefertiti, and indeed there was something of Nefertiti to its cast, something exotic; a slant to the eye socket, perhaps? And he wondered, and pondered, and rubbed the cheekbone (zygomatic process, his mind faintly reminded him) and debated how much such a thing would cost him and if it really were for sale, in this dingy little secondhand shop, and wasn't it beautiful (stopping a passer-by), wasn't it unearthly beautiful?
(The passer-by, not unexpectedly, cast him a glance of befuddled astonishment, and hastily backed away, nodding, into a rack of moth-eaten coats.)
And he clasped it to his chest,

Best Halloween Ever by RalfMaximus
Best Halloween EverAzil and Deezil loved Halloween, because they could walk the streets without worrying about people screaming and running away.  They didn’t even need a costume.  They just went as they were: a couple of demons with red scaly skin, claws, and horns.
Plus there was free candy.
“Trick or treat!” Azil shouted when Mrs.McDuffy opened her door.
“Oh my, what a scary devil!” she laughed, lowering the candy bowl so Azil could select a treat.  He took a Snickers bar, and surprised Mrs.McDuffy by taking a bite of it right there on her porch, right through the wrapping.
Deezil met him at the curb.  “What’d you score?”
Azil opened his mouth wide and Deezil peered within.  “Oh, sweet.  Snickers.  And what did she score?”
“Gas leak,” Azil mumbled around the last of his candy bar.  “That was good.  Your turn.”
Deezil looked around, pointed at a

JUDGES' PICKS

But wait, it's not over! I asked each judge to give me a Judge's Pick, an entry that they wanted to single out based on any criterion they chose. Here they are:

For being one of the only entries to make me grin! Halloween can be funny, people! (:

I Hate Halloween by seussical-love

down the basement stairs.

For taking one of the most cliché and expected images of Halloween and making a hilarious turn out of it.

Midnight Encounter by ThornyEnglishRose
Midnight EncounterJezzie was snoozing by the gas fire, her body stretched out and her stomach pointing towards the heat.  Cate was sitting in an armchair, wearing a black dress and a black wig, plaiting Emma’s hair into pigtails.
‘Will you keep still?’ said Cate.
‘I am keeping still,’ said Emma.
Chris came in and walked past Jezzie.  Her right ear flicked with annoyance.  One of the kittens joined her on the rug and touched her tail with its nose.  She twitched again, not bothering to open her eyes.
‘Where are you going?’ said Cate.
‘Just outside,’ said Chris.  He’d draped a black curtain round his shoulders, and had some kind of plastic mask on his head, ready to be pulled down over his face.
‘Right, fantastic,’ said Cate.  ‘There, done.  Go and look in the mirror, Em.’
Emma went into the hallway.  A moment later she came back, and said to C

Because it charmed the hell out of me, and showed me a side to the season I had never seen before.

Each Judge's Pick winner will receive either a one-month Premium Membership (per judge that picked their entry) or a $5 USD value from their Wish List.

It was a long, hard-fought road, and the competition was fierce! Thank you very much to everyone who entered.

SCORING

Should you want to know, here's how the entries were chosen.

Each judge was asked to score each entry, giving it from 0-50 points based on three criteria:

Creativity (0-20 points) in which judges scored how creatively the story was told and how the subject matter was presented.

Technique (0-20 points), in which the judges rated the technical aspects of the piece; grammar, adherence to poetic form, word choice, etc.

The Halloween Factor (0-10 points), in which the judges scored how much and how well the Halloween holiday (or variants, such as All Soul's Day, Day of the Dead, Guy Fawkes Day, etc.) was used in the piece. I received several entries that made no mention of the holiday at all, but instead of disqualifying them outright, we did this instead.

The judges sent their scores to me, and I compiled them. The entries to receive the highest scores averaged among all judges became the winners. I acted as the tiebreaker when necessary.

Thank you all, and may your year be free of nightmares...until next Halloween!

Hot dog! I do believe I see me up there. And I must admit that I look pretty out of place compared to the absolutely wonderful quality of the other entries, buttttt I am super excited, nonetheless. (:

(Does this mean I'll get a month added onto the subscription I have now?)
