Aladdin Poster III by mementomoryo Aladdin Poster III by mementomoryo
Edit: Better scan, and now available as a print! :)

Third time's the charm, or so I hope!

This is my third attempt to paint a workable poster illustration for the HAJET Hokkaido Players' Spring 2010 production of 'Aladdin.' This time, I left a lot of white space and used a lot of bright colours to attract the eye with. Also, the white space allows for plenty of text. I think I'm getting better at this. :)

Also, my scanner SUCKS ASS. Arrrrgh!

Watercolors, pencils, and minimal gel pens on cold-press watercolor paper.

I really like the composition here, even the white space actually seems to help. It keeps the contrast between the ordinary world, the cold, blue part, and the magical world of the genie, warm and colourful. However, I sort of wonder if you might have coloured Aladdin differently. I don't mean to sound impertinent, and of course this may be totally contrary to your idea for the picture, but I think to a certain extent the composition winds up drawing the eye towards Aladdin. He is the bridge between the bright magic and the monochromatic ordinary. He's right at the centre of the picture and for me he becomes the focus. But I feel like colouring him completely blue plays this down- it makes Aladdin look like no more than another plain blue rock in the ordinary world. I think if he had a bit of colour- not as much as the smoke from the lamp- but if he were sort of mixed, then it would reinforce that Aladdin is special, he is the one standing on the cusp of a mystical world, not magical himself but perhaps drawn above the ordinary?

Sorry for blabbing on so much, I have a tendency to get long in the tooth about critique... But I really do love the picture and the composition, and I certainly would use this if I were a theatre. Good luck!

I like this one a lot. I like how it's eye-catching enough to draw people in from a distance but has another layer of detail which appears when you get up close. It's like a reward for taking the trouble to investigate this nifty poster. :3

Right now, the composition seems a little too centered from my liking, but it's entirely possible that things might seem different when the text is added. Anyhow, that's really minor. I really like the poster overall and I would totally go see this production if it were not on the other side of the world. ^^:

Not that I didn't love the other "versions" of a poster, but this one does look a bit more simplistic and maybe that's why I'd read the hypothetical text instead of jaw-dropping at the art... not that it isn't lovely, just not as detailed as the other ones :3
