Jared Leto by Melusaaste Jared Leto by Melusaaste
Jared Leto, again. This took about 26 hours, I tried to make it as realistic as I can.
I used Photoshop Elements and a mouse.

Woohoo, he saw my painting! I'm so happy :) twitter.com/JaredLeto/status/6…

UPDATE: I fixed the hair. And skin and, well... everything. Again.

Notice that when I draw, I do the sketch with pencils and since I don't have a scanner, I have to take the picture with my camera. Then I continue working with photoshop. So that's why there's the camera data showing on the side of my deviations.

My first response when this came up on the screen was that it was a great portrait photo. Upon reading the comments I learned that this is NOT a photo, but rather a drawing. It is an excellent--and incredible--display of your talent.

Some thoughts:

(1) I like the positioning of the face in relationship to the frame. Cutting the face just above the eyebrows works well at drawing the viewer's eye directly into the subject's, as opposed to his nose, which would otherwise be the case given its positioning in the middle of the shot. Having the slight turn of the head rather than straight on works well.

(2) While I can see why you'd have the black hair on the left side of the face, it lacks sufficient depth and instead of appearing to be hair it looks like a black void. You might consider adding some almost black coloring to that portion, particularly as you have the light source hitting the cheek right there and one would expect a bit of light reflection. That would still give you the framing the hair creates but also help to make it even more realistic.

(3) I like the texture on the background wall but am not fond of the color as it competes with his skin tone. What about trying a maroon? That would be dark enough for his face to pop out, yet light enough to show a contrast with the hair while still showing the texture of the wall.

(4) Your attention to subtle detail is remarkable and, I believe, is what helps lift this piece above most portrait drawings. In particular, I like the slight gap in the tooth on the right and the pimple on the nose. There is a concept in Japan known as Wabi-Sabi, which can be explained (roughly) that the imperfect makes the perfect, or the flaw creates the beauty. Your portrait captures that feeling very well.

Excellent job!

When I first saw this I was just rocked by the eyes! So much detail in them it looks like they were photographed almost. It is literally what draws you in first and thats what a lot of people like and thus why this portrait is so successful.

The skin as well I think you rocked! Some people have a habit of making the skin look too perfect which falls too much under 'super-realistic' which is kind of unbelieveable in a sense.

The composition is awesome as well because again it draws you right into the eyes and it puts really good focus on the rest of his features. It makes it feel like your in his personal space which honestly who doesn't want to be in Jared Leto's personal space? lol

The background is the only thing I have issues with, the squiggly texture feels too much like it's drawn and takes away from the overall composistion because the face is fairly simple and straightforward then you have some squigglies thrown at you. If it was a flat colour with some sort of gradient and had the look of a real out of focus room or studio I think it would contribute to this looking more photo-realistic overall.

Finak verdict: LOVE!

Thought this was a photo. You say you aren't 100% happy with the facial hair, but the lighting and everything looks sooo good in it! + The eyes, simply amazing.

Made with mouse? Don't make me laugh. Your sketch doesn't quite match up with the quality of your finished drawing. And please don't send me the "video" to prove to me, that you did indeed draw it. If you did, I dare you to make a video in which you see the process from beginning to end, without just giving screenshots of the process every now and then. Because this is an insult to people that have been drawing their entire life.

Lol, did you even read the comment?
I dared you to make a video by just recording you screen from beginning to end, guess you're not really able to do that. 'Your sketch doesn't quite match up with the quality of your finished drawing.'
Your sketch was clearly traced, compared to the technique that doesn't quite match up with the end result. Again, just going to repeat myself cus I think you didn't really understand the message (although I thought I made myself pretty clear).
'If you did, I dare you to make a video in which you see the process from beginning to end, without just giving screenshots of the process every now and then.' You know, like recording your screen while drawing, speed drawing, instead of just taking a few printscreens every now and then of your "process". You're not the first person I've seen that wants to "prove" in that way, you really did draw it.

I would probably make a video like that if I still painted realistic stuff, but I got tired of it years ago. I get comments like this maybe once every year and every time I kinda consider doing it. Maybe I will, just for people like you. Although people would probably just say it's fake too. Anyway, you can believe me or think I'm a liar, your choice I guess.

Heehee, it's always funny how many drawings of Jared Leto by aaaall kinds of people have something in the description mentioning that it's one of many with him as a subject. Which, by the way, I completely understand. I'm as straight as it gets but DAMN this guy's hot.

I actually needed to see the step-by-step to determine that the category wasn't a lie and that this was, indeed, a painting... it might be the most realistic digital drawing I've ever seen, to be honest.
