I have a different take.  I took a swirl and using Blender and this script:…

with a little help from Inkscape (although, I think, it would probably work as well in Illustrator (which I don't have)).  I used Tiled Clones to rotate it and thickened the stroke a little.

turned it into a 3D printable tea candle shade.

Pretty simple process.
