So, Seiren [link]
is always trying to seduce people and convince them that becoming an ocean spirit called a White Seiren is a great decision~!
But some of you may be wondering: BUT WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENS TO ME?
Well, here is something to explain the process in simple terms!
First, you agree that you want to become a White Seiren. Then you take a dip in the ocean.
You are already in the ocean and drowning or something, and one of these Black Seiren come up to you to strike a deal in order to save your forfeit life!
Well, as soon as you agree and hit the water, the Black Seiren uses their magical skills to release your soul from your body. Your body falls apart (magic in the water kind of rips it apart). If you are made of flesh, your flesh disintegrates and dissolves. If you are made of other weird parts, it just gets ripped into smaller pieces to float to the bottom. >_>
The soul then goes through a "purification" process where part of it gets converted so that all your past memories are taken into "the waters of Mnemosyne" and leave you forever, and you just stop caring about the past. Generally, no seiren have names, and names aren't important to them. However, some of them take on nicknames once they start frequenting an area a lot and the locals start to know them and name them.
Ocean magic and energy then surrounds you to give you a new body that looks like a white, pearly fish with very bright trim colours. They can have a variety of different colours for their trim. It's kind of random what colour trim you might get, but usually it's based on your soul's colour or a colour you have affinity with. The fish is usually very large: at least the size of a row boat. They can get larger as they age. Seiren for example, is about the size of a killer whale (~ 25 feet long, not including the trailing tail).
White Seiren don't "grow old" and die, and usually maintain their appearance throughout their lifetime. They can still "die" or get destroyed though, and when they do, they just get reabsorbed into the ocean and their soul disappears.
Although the base personality of the person they were before may be present in some form, white seiren generally don't care about normal human preoccupations like "having someone to love", wealth, purpose in life, death, and injury/disability. Instead, a lot of those worries are replaced with a sense of duty to serving the ocean and keeping the ecosystem balanced and healthy.
White Seiren have powers such as using telepathy to communicate (and lose their vocal cords, so they can't talk). They also gain the ability to telekinetically manipulate water. Usually, their water manipulation is stronger if they are nearer to a lot of water (they can't really do anything with a bucket of water except make it splash or wiggle a little). They are also able to shapeshift into forms they are familiar with. Usually the old self was a human, so they can shapeshift to human form. They need a lot of practice and experience to shapeshift into other animals and stuff. Different fish are usually easiest for hem to learn next.
In any form they shift into, their colourations are predominantly white with a pearly rainbow shine, with some colours of their trim showing on their eyelids and hair. If they lost body parts or were born with disabilities, those parts are usually "replaced or repaired" in Seiren-Turning. The same is true if the soul is damaged (such as in the case of demons).
If they were metahumans and had other superpowers before turning into White Seiren, those skills usually are locked away or become resistances instead. For example, if they were a fire user, instead of keeping their fire abilities, they usually would gain some defense against fire instead. People with more powerful souls are usually stronger with their water manipulation, telepathy, shapeshifting, and innate resistances. This is why Seiren likes trying to seduce powerful beings to becoming white seiren.
In the sea, in their fish form, white serien swim fairly fast, using their water skills to create currents to carry them quickly and defend themselves. They are usually weaker and slower while on land, usually having normal human stats in human form (human defense, human strength, human speed). It's only if they were meta humans before with a lot of strength or defense that some of it carries over (only about 25% carries over to their new self). They also usually listen to any oceanic authority figure without question. So let's say a sea god or king of the sea tells them to create a tidal wave to wipe out a human village: OKAY!
Only Black Seiren can perform seiren-turning. No one really knows where Black Seiren come from, but maybe they emerge from all the other dead ocean spirits coming together to form one protective entity.
