It's long, but it's also important.
Recently there have been reports of Utau theft in the community. I've seen some of the chaos first hand, and can confirm that some people in this group have been effected.
So I'd like to take this moment to address our group on how the situation should be handled. At least within the confines of DeviantArt.
Here are some useful tips and recommendations on how to handle an art thief:1) Report the user to DeviantArt.
If the stolen content is yours, and you can provide proof, DeviantArt will take action against the user. If the stolen content is not yours, you should contact the user it was stolen from, so they can go to DA for help.
You can contact DeviantArt by following this link: contact.deviantartsupport.com/…2) Report the user to the Admins of this group.
If the offender is in this group, let us know. But we will expect to see proof as well. Once you've provided proof a user is stealing from you, we'll remove them from this club.
Keep in mind that these users are typically the type to have more than one account. So us banning one member may not completely remove them from the group. We also, of course, don't have the power to remove them from DeviantArt completely.3) If you feel it's necessary, warn your watchers or fellow community members about this user. But do so in an objective, fact based manner.
Yes, theft is bad. And yes, you have every right to be upset. But if you want the truth to be heard, you should be as objective as you can be. You can warn people a user is dangerous without attaching it to an emotional rant.
The more rationality you show, the more people will believe there's something valid to what you're saying. Otherwise they may think you're simply being over dramatic. Or maybe even that you're lying.
Being emotional can also rile people up. Your watchers may start attacking the thief, which will most likely only cause the thief to attack back. All you'll accomplish is dragging more people into the mix.
It's always a possibility the thief in question is simply a troll, so your goal should be to get rid of them as quickly and quietly as possible. Otherwise you're simply encouraging them.4)If needed, block the user.
If the user is stealing from you, it's natural that you'd want to keep an eye on them. But at the same time, try not to obsess over them. If you need a break, block them. That's it.
For basics, anyway.
At the end of the day, it's up to you how you handle these situations. But it is encouraged that you handle things rationally, for the sake of yourself and those around you. These suggestions are based off of a general situation. Some specific situations may call for different actions.
If anyone's having an issue that they'd like help handling, feel free to contact me. I'll do the best I can to help you sort things out.
