Some highlights from today’s Daughter of the Lilies update!

Thanks for sending in so many questions, dear readers! Here are some I wanted to answer but didn’t have time to get to:

For Brent:

  • Which is harder, that rock or your head? (Answer: let’s hit him with it and find out.)
  • What is your pain tolerance? You’re complaining a lot more about (previously mentioned) rock than that massive bite in your arm. (Answer: Brent complains more about his hurt pride than any part of his hurt body.)
  • Are you an idiot or just a jerk? (Answer: both.)

For Lyra:

  • What do you think of Thistle? Do you get along? (Answer: Meh.)

For Orrig:

  • How long have you been working in the Mercenary business? (Answer: a long time.)
  • How does one grow muttonchops as glorious as yours? (Answer: Maybe he’s born with them. Or maybe its just Maybelene. Or patience.)

For Thistle:

  • What is your favorite kind of book to read? (Answer: all of them.)
  • What is your fondest childhood memory? (SPOILERS SHHH)
  • How is magic categorized and what is your favorite kind? (Answer: this would take too long.)

Maybe at the end of the next chapter I can actually get to answering these - but in the meantime I have a ton of comic pages to work on!

convo between me and friend while reading this:

Mars: Spoiler Spoiler Spoiler:…
Mars: No, there's not any actual spoilers. That's just a quote
Mars: But Orrig telling of great grandfather is a very Reinhardt-like thing to do
Tam: I don't care about 'em anyway.  LOL
Mars: lol
Tam: awwwww
Tam: Also very Kup
Mars: Yes, that too

And then there was gleeful cackling.
I just want to say being a character and talking to your author would be like talking to a god they already know what your going say and they choose what you say and how you say it and you can do nothing to stop them. They created every moment in your life. They have decided every moment in your life whether you live or die or if want sausage for breakfast. Every achievement you have done was not only pointless but you were guaranteed to win. If you want to know why we do this it's because we like to vicariously live through fictional people. Your existence is to entertain your author and their readers you have no meaning and you have no free will you are just a hobby for a chunk of meat that can think independently on a rock in a infinite universe that will get so big that it will collapse on it's self thus destroying everything in existence.

What an incredibly appropriate username.

pffft, I'd sit and listen to Orrig's family war stories. heart:

"That question RACIST."

I am saving that quote to answer every question I don't want to answer.

"Orrig! I already know this story! I wrote it, remember?!"

Is utterly hilarious. XD

I just say things the way they are, man.

...Life as an author with characters has gotten so much worse since I changed to human. I don't get no respect no more.
lennan's avatar
Trufax: they were just waiting for you to turn human. Easier to catch and keep hold of unlike your dragon self. ;)

Can't you use authorial powers to... change shape back to something more dragonny?
MegSyv's avatar
I could, but then I'm somehow appropriated into furry culture against my will, by fans and non-fans alike.

This has been a good compromise, though:

So this is so cute!

One of my favorite aspects is the cartoony way you've drawn yourself here. It's adorable. XD I like the round shape of the face, and how that makes the big, open-mouthed expressions even stronger. Which I think it a great choice because it makes the goofy, silly, always-disrespected-by-your-characters reactions even more fun! I like the smiling faces, but my favorite expressions of your you are the "You know what? Don't answer that." one and the terrified expression you have as Orrig grabs you by the collar and your frantically, desperately flailing to get away. They make me laugh and smile!

I like Thistle's expressions. We see so little of her face, that apart from her eyes, her body language has to communicate a lot to compensate. Which is really interesting! On the one hand, having her face shadowed by her hood and mask makes her eyes pop a little more -- you see a lot of polite, eagerness in her eyes when you first call on her, a really knowledgeable look as she closes them answering you, and most potently the sad look in her eyes when she passes on her other question breaks your heart. And like I said, the body language does a lot, too -- seeing her shoulders slump in that sad "panel" pulls so much weight in making it feel sad; and the way her head tilts a bit as she looks up to the side as you've called on her makes me imagine that she's perked up and straightened up in reaction to being called on. So yeah, it was really interesting to see how strongly her emotions come through even though so much of her face is shrouded.

I also love the expressions on the group's face when Orrig starts telling his story! The pain and agony and "GROAN NO" in their faces is awesome. XD Those eyes on Thistle hold so much terror, and the way Lyra hunches forward as her eyes sag and her mouth hangs open as she looks up has this desperate exasperation that feels so strong. And more importantly, makes me giggle at her agony. X3

And Orrig is fun! I like his expression and pose as he starts telling his story! He looks so pleased and excited to tell it, and it's made even more effective after seeing him being pretty...uninterested up to that point.

But yeah! This is super fun and cute and silly. Great job! : )

Aw man I always get really excited when I see comments from you, Hiroshi! Thanks!

Yeah, this is the first time I've actually started feeling really comfortable with this new way of drawing myself. I'm glad that a lot of the stuff I was trying to get across actually did - especially with the design and everything else. Making Thistle so expressive with so little to use is tricky but fun - it's interesting to try and solve a lot of those creative problems when there's a really complex emotion that doesn't have any words or dialogue to help clarify it.

Orrig is one of those characters that is still surprising me the more I learn about him. He's quickly becoming one of my favorite guys!

You're welcome! : )

Between finding really great ways to make Thistle amazingly expressive, and what you said about Orrig and everything, it sounds like you're having a lot of fun drawing these guys. That's awesome. : )

Oh my word, I was BUSTING UP LAUGHING through this. XD And yaaay, both my questions got answered AND DIDN'T MAKE ANYONE MAD OR REQUIRE SPOILERS. I feel ACCOMPLISHED, peeps.

That was fun! On to chapter two! :D GOOD LUUUUCK KEEP IT UP YOU'RE DOING AWESOME

Oh my gosh it was really tricky not to spoil stuff!!!
This story has been really weird because since some people already know what happens and there's spoiler art still floating around out there, it's hard not to just post stuff, but I don't want to spoil anything! Aaa!

I hope you found them satisfactory at least!
Riverfox237's avatar
I did indeed! My condolences for the job of not spoiling. ^^; I shall do my best to not add to the spoil field.

Oh, and Part 4 is up on Tumblr!

Haha, I loved this but my question made Thistle sad D8 I'm sorry babeh! I didn't mean it!
MegSyv's avatar
I'm sorry! If it helps it made me sad too and I felt really bad...!
FeretStudios's avatar
Nooo!!! That doesn't make it better! D8 Now I made two people sad! D8

Huh, I didn't realize there was a gutter to trip over in that question.  Oops XD.  Serves me right for not using better phrasing.  Still hilarious, though.  Orrig is the best!
