It's very sweet of Wilfreda to be so forgiving and also let the two check out the secret tome. For all of Victor's complaints that it can't really be a spell book he seems to be rather disappointed that it's a cookbook. Wilfreda's proud look in the last panel is awesome and adorable as heck. Thanks.

Victor's was more a face of "How could I expect otherwise?"

I wonder how old the book is. Recipes from before the New World? Non-chocolate sweets? Blood as thickener? Various non-english entries? That cover looks suspiciously scaled. Lizard? Swordfish? What would the early pages show?
Old recipes can be very interesting. All sorts of ways to cook that you wouldn't even try nowadays. Pastries that included meats. Old bread used in anything. Deliberate use of non-chicken eggs. Wine as an flavouring ingredient, and still meant for children. Pepper in pastries. Bone flour. How do you make candy during a time of famine? How do you make candy out of grass and wildflowers?
In many ways it's a good thing that tastes have changed (and germ theory) since then.
