Airstream Futuropolis

The Airstream Futuropolis typeface orginated as a sketch of characters that I sketched on a page of notes around 2001 or 2002. It was originally called TRANSITION since that was the first word that I wrote in the typeface.

As I started to develop the typeface into a full set of characters in 2014, I sought a name that reflected the theme of the typeface most appropriately. I decided to name it after the working title for a fictional art history project in the William Gibson short story The Gernsback Continuum:

"Cohen introduced us and explained that Dialta [a noted pop-art historian] was the prime mover behind the latest Barris-Watford project, an illustrated history of what she called "American Streamlined Modern." Cohen called it "raygun Gothic." Their working title was The Airstream Futuropolis: The Tomorrow That Never Was."
