Robert Clive: Governor of India
Prologue
(Montage of India: cotton looms, silk weaving, bustling markets of spices and jewels, then European ships arriving, forts built along the coasts.)
Narrator (James Brackett, voice-over):
“For centuries, India was famed for its cotton, silk, and wealth. Such riches drew the Europeans—the Portuguese, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, French, and British—each establishing forts and trading companies. But it was one man who laid the foundation of British dominance in India. His name was Robert Clive.”
Birth & Childhood
(Scene: 1725, Shropshire, England. A restless boy causing mischief.)
Narrator:
“Robert Clive was born on 29 September 1725 in Market Drayton, Shropshire. He was known for his fiery temper and rebellious youth.”
Young Robert (scaling a building):
“If I reach the top, they’ll know Robert Clive fears nothing!”
Father:
“Mark my words—this boy will either ruin us… or make his fortune.”
