Obeying Doctor Who’s #1 rule not to wander off, I work as a freelance illustrator in and around my native Louisville, Kentucky. Graduating from Ivy Tech School of Fine Art + Design in May of 2011, and operating under the pseudonym “Garrett McGillustrator” (see what I did there?), I have valiantly sought to impart my talents wherever they are needed, regardless of if they were actually wanted. Unfortunate victims of my art include Disney Parks, Louisville Magazine, the Kentucky Convention & Visitors Bureau, Luckett & Farley, The Alley Theater, local children’s book publishers, and anyone for whom I am too broke to buy an actual birthday or Christmas present.

I love things that are sweetly sad, uncommonly beautiful, things which reveal their true vulnerabilities in only the most trustworthy settings; things ironic, sardonic, ionic, iconic, but I prohibitively exclude the bubonic.

Hey everyone!

Holy monkey; I'm approaching 22k pageviews? What the hell is everyone looking at!? GIF Gravity Falls - Celestabellebethabelle  In all seriousness, I'm very grateful to everyone who's taken their time to look at my stuff.

Wanted to drop a line and let you know I hadn't forgotten you guys. I still lurk around here every few days, or if I forget at least once a week. You may notice that I haven't posted too much lately, and the main reason for that is that at the moment I'm wrapped up in a number of things and still doing tons of digital painting, none of which I'm able to share at this point. Keep your eyes peeled later this fall, and I'll be able to share more information and reveal the big project!

Other than that, I've been very busy being dad, being chauffeur, being cook, and being part-time-employed-hours-without-part-time-paycheck working on my art.

On top of all that, I've been actively engaging with new colleagues at the #OatleyAcademy and #oalive. For anyone who wants to up their game in terms of their visual storytelling, I can't praise it highly enough. Season 1 is almost up, and season 2 I'm sure will be starting probably shortly after the new year. Check 'em out.

I'm also auditioning for a very exclusive online composition class, jockeying amongst nearly 100 other equally-motivated applicants for a handful of slots. I've written my letter of intent, and am gathering my references. Hopefully they aren't as tired of me as I am, and if everything goes how I'd like, you should a dramatic improvement in my subsequent art pieces.

Last thing I'll mention; most of what I like to put up here are what I consider my 'finished' or at least 'developed' pieces. For my everyday sketching-for-fun stuff, check out my Instagram, and only because it's a necessary evil in this artist-self-promotion thing, it also cross-posts to that roiling cacophonous cesspit of evil and intellectual decay if that happens to be your particular social media poison.

I'll be going to CTNX later this year so if you happen to be going as well, let me know! I'd look forward to putting faces to a bunch of the names who've been in it for the long haul :-)

God bless!
P.S. Catch up with me! I'd love to shoot the breeze! Official | Twitter | FB | Instagram | Tumblr

Thanks for all the favs! Though I can't help but feel like you wouldn't have done it if I weren't your sister. :P

I'm here to support you in whatever way I can!

I have two main reasons for following artists; convivial, and aspirational. The first group are my friends and family, whom I consider to be 'in the trenches' alongside me trying to improve each and every day. Even among those people, there is a wide range of skill, with the common denominator being that they are like myself relatively unknown.

The second group are artists to whom I aspire to meet a similar level of 'virtuosity' in the craft. Those are the big names that most people have heard of like Creature Box, Art Germ, Stjepan Sejic, Lorelay Bove, Jen Bartel, and countless others who are leaders in the art community.

That said, you're partially right that I fav your stuff because you're my sister, but the second component of that is that I'm much MUCH more invested in encouraging you to keep going. I never want my progress to be a hindrance to your own. I once heard it said that the only artist with whom you should critically compare your work to is yourself; am I better today than I was yesterday? Am I moving forwards, or back? Just like someone who is unpracticed in athletics can't look around at the other athletes in the gym and say "I'm nowhere near as fit as them...I should quit now," instead you track your own progress and find that you are in better shape a month down the line than when you started, and so on.

That's why a lot of really high profile artists will post "redraw this!" pics, and the difference between the 5 to 10 year progress is that of a child versus a master. Same person, but with 5 to 10 years progress (Noah Bradley immediately springs to mind here; if you haven't seen his 2002 to 2012 progress image, prepare to be shocked).

We're all in it together, keep it up, and only criticize your art in relation to your own past work.

That’s a much more detailed response than I was expecting! Lol. Thank you for the encouragement!

Oh you know, the usual. Making comics, working, that kind of stuff haha.
