MBCMechachu on DeviantArthttps://www.deviantart.com/mbcmechachu/art/National-Pokedex-Icon-Dex-824897934MBCMechachuSo this is something that I felt was long overdue. Having had such success on my ever ambitious National Dex project I thought that perhaps having an icon dex to run alongside wouldn't be too out of the norm.
As of June 2021 the credits sheet has been converted to a google spreadsheet. Links shall be provided for the following.
How I plan to display the icons are as follows:
The icons will be categorized by generation & will display the more up to date menu sprites first & foremost.
Each category will include a total of 10 rows, with each row having enough room to display up to 80 menu sprites at a time.
Any Pokémon that has had more than one menu sprite made for it over the years (Steelix or Ludicolo for instance) will also include such on a row below the main one(s).
The same will also go for Pokémon with asymmetrical designs that were made facing to the right as opposed to the left.
Seeing as how Sword & Shield have established that fully evolved Pokémon get new icons (with some exceptions) I've set up a row underneath the up to date sprites should we get new Switch styled icons for Pokémon that aren't in Sword & Shield. That also means there will be a couple custom "what if" sprites in here that are going to fill in for some Pokémon for the time it takes for them to appear in a mainline Pokémon game again.
On the topic of customs there will be some icons shown off here that are also present in Nat. Dex Version Delta.
As some of you may know from what I mentioned back on my custom Alcremie sprite post all the new icons we got from Sword & Shield were not clean rips & people within the spriting community; myself included, have taken it upon ourselves to clean them up until the day comes that they're no longer so compressed from the get go. So to help distinguish which icon type is which the clean icons will be displayed with a dark blue background, while the icons that still need to be cleaned shall be displayed with a light blue background.
1/9/20 - Added Gender Variation into part of the project.
Added 3DS style icons of the Gen 8 sprites & will be represented by a greenish background
2/10/20 - Stage 1 Pokémon & some Basic Pokémon are now included in the upscaling project as a way to tie into the project RadicalCharizard is working on.
3/16/20 - Completely redid the look of the icon dex. Decided to take a page from TheCraigadile 's icon dex by incorporating the dex numbers as well as color coded what generation each Pokémon comes from.
Looking at the 3DS style icons from each generation you might notice some more Pokémon in there that would have been fully evolved prior to generation 4. These Pokémon are going to be included in the upscaling fray.
3/22/20 - The mega evolution icons have now been given a cosmetic option to display what mega stone is used to attain that specific form; or the Meteor & Orbs in the case for the weather trio.
6/21/20 Added the icons that were implemented into Sword & Shield's Isle of Armor patch.
8/24/20 As of now all the icons for Sword & Shield have been cleaned up.
11/1/20 Added all the icons from The Crown Tundra. Color code was also updated with compressed icons being represented in green & custom 3DS icons being represented in gold.
11/7/20 All necessary Pokemon that aren't in Sword & Shield have been given upscales. Any subsequent additions are either going to be superficial &/or quality control.
1/2/21 The way that things're organized has been reworked. There will now be four different categories:
Category 1: Switch Style - Basically the icons that're in the style of both Let's Go & more so Sword & Shield onward.
Category 2: 3DS Style - The icons here are reflective of the style of icons we saw in both Gens 6 & 7. Any icons for Pokemon introduced subsequent to Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon will be custom made. Hence why all fully evolved gen 8 Pokemon show as being light yellow.
Category 3: Miscellaneous - This is mainly meant for the icons for Pokemon that show up in National Dex Version Delta's Anime/Manga Exclusive section. As well as showing the icons of Pokemon that're still in the style of the previous two categories that were considered outdated; i.e. Tyranitar's Icon prior to the Isle of Armor or the XY sprite for Steelix & Ludicolo. This is also where the PSS/Pelago flipped sprites for some Pokemon are gonna show along with custom switch styled versions of said Pokemon.
Category 4: RadicalCharizard Style - This like I mentioned is mainly to show off the custom icons made for stage 1 & even a couple basic staged Pokemon for RadicalCharizard 's personal project. And like I also mentioned there will be some (personally unneeded) changes being made to Pokemon that would fall under this category that would've also been considered fully evolved like Kingler & Lucario. In those cases they're going to be downscaled the be 30 pixels in height at most. The only exceptions to this rule RC has set up being Alolan Exeggutor, the Wailmer line & all of the Ultra Beasts.
Color coding has also been reworked. The pre-established colors are still the same but there's now some new colors added to the key to determine where each sprite comes from.
4/17/21 Icons in the Switch Style category are going to be displayed with a black outline of 7-7-7 RGB.
5/1/21 The 3DS icons have been reverted to their outline colors that were seen in Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon.
6/23/21 Completely redid how the dex looks again. The Misc category has been split into two styles; one for 3DS style & one for Switch style. Progress on the shiny dex has begun so I've decided to scrap the RadicalCharizard style & in its place implement the shiny category for Switch style. For anyone curious I still plan to keep the upscales of the middle stages as I'm still using them in National Dex Version Delta. Such sprites will be provided in the Switch Style Misc category. Shiny palettes are provided courtesy of Dada78641 on Twitter. github.com/msikma/pokesprite/b…
8/24/21 It appears that Sword & Shield will be the last set of games to feature sprite art in some form for quite a while, so in response to this any & all new sprites added will more than likely be custom. Case & point: the stuff we got from the presents footage.
9/17/21 It had recently been discovered that the new shinies Minior had in Pokemon Home were only glitches so they have been swapped out in the main shiny category for the pre Home Glitch look. The "original" shinies can still be found in the Misc. Category.
10/3/21 All the necessary middle stages have been upscaled now. Any & all stuff to come to this in the near future will more than likely be superficial inclusions or custom menu sprites for Pokemon that don't have them due to Game Freak appearing to drop the sprite art for the PC & Party as was stated a couple updates ago.
1/28/22 Decided to take a page from the decision of making the Misc. Dex & split the icon dex in half. This page here will be entirely devoted to the Switch style from here on out. A 3DS style icon dex will be posted here. Backgrounds have also been made much more uniform in coloration, with the top left corner indicating which games the sprites come from. The color coding being as presented:
Light Green - 3DS game
This'll be mostly dedicated to the sprites for forms of older Pokemon such as the Cosplay Pikachu from Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire or the sprites for non fully evolved Pokemon that were given new sprite art over the years.
Blue - Let's Go Pikachu/Let's Go Eevee
Upscales mainly given to Pokemon that're taller than 4 feet in height.
Light Blue - Sword & Shield - Base Game
The point in where fully evolved Pokemon; with some exceptions, are given the upscale treatment. The only Pokemon still given the Let's Go Treatment being Wailmer & Type: Null as both are still taller than 4 feet.
Dark Yellow - Sword & Shield - Isle of Armor
Dark Green - Sword & Shied - The Crown Tundra
Red - Not in any Switch Game / with 2D pixel art
For context Cyndaquil is in say both BDSP & Legends Arceus yet neither of those games have pixel art made for the roster.
Dark Blue - Custom
This is mainly applied to the Pokemon that're in games subsequent to Sword & Shield that don't have any pixel art for either the Pokemon displayed in the party or item sprites for stuff in your bag. This'll more than likely be how things are going forward unless Generation 9 has other plans. This'll also include menu sprites made for Pokemon that are in SwSh that're more or less looked at as inconsistant in quality compared to the rest of the roster. Such examples being how the regular forms of Raichu, Sandslash, Ninetales, Persian & Dugtrio all got new menu sprites but the Alolan forms didn't.
3/20/22 As of this point in time I've decided to take yet another page from the battle sprite dex & separate the normal & Shiny palettes. A link to the shiny dex will be provided here.
5/9/22 Decided to just lump in the 3DS style sprites for all the fully evolved mon into a category called "optional sprites", threw in the Let's Go sprites of some Pokemon that were made in Switch style as well as a couple of custom what if sprites that were made prior to the expansion pass. The color indicator has also been switched from orange to light green.
12/30/22 lumped in some of the more niche forms for some Pokemon into the main sheet, including some that'll be exclusive to the icon dex.
4/4/23 Upped the categories from 80 columns & 28 rows, to 100 columns & 30 rows. Plans are in the works to eventually get the Shiny & Misc dex up to speed.
6/12/23 Decided to merge the anime/manga exclusive forms + spin-off material in with the main stuff proper. The asymmetrical flips will remain solely with the misc dex however.
3/16/24 Added form description boxes much like on the battle sprite dex.
3/22/24 Reworked the Key a tad.
♂ - Male
♀ - Female
A - Anime
M - Manga
O - Other
B - Bonus
4/16/24 Added several new menu sprites in promotional effort with Pokéos.
9/18/24 Tweaked the amount of rows each sprites can hold, along with bringing the background more in line with the rest of NDVD.
Official Icons come from:
- Pokémon X & Y
- Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire
- Pokémon Shuffle
- Pokémon Sun & Moon
- Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon
- Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu & Let's Go Eevee
- Pokémon Sword & Shield

Hello! I’ve read the description and checked the credits sheet for your National Pokedex – Icon Dex.
First, may I use these icon sprites on a non-official Pokémon fan site (we record Pokémon TCG match results and use icons to represent an opponent’s deck)?
If that’s okay, may I do minor processing only for display purposes—specifically cropping each icon and making the background transparent—without editing the pixel art itself?
Lastly, what is the preferred way to give proper credit to all contributors? Is linking to your credits spreadsheet in the site’s Credits page sufficient, or would you like any specific wording/placement?
Thank you for your time.
