How busy are you currently? My manga studio is looking to employ a second artistic contractor to add to our team, specifically in the area of comic pages. Would be a semi-full-time position, as we're illustrating an entire volume (will provide more details via PM).

Hey Mayshing,

I was wondering how much it would cost to have you collaborate with me on a manga/graphic novel. I'm not the best at panelling/composition/layout stuff, so that would be the part I'd have you do. I would really only need some rough sketches of the pages in order to work from. I might also sometimes change things, or ask for a re-do of a page, but you'd always get paid for your work. How much would that sort of thing cost?

I'd like to think my story is compelling and interesting (don't we all, lol) but I don't have much of it in script form. I'll see if I can't post it somewhere so I can send it to you.

Script, u can just e-mail it to me.
but right now i am not doing any commissions because i want to finish my film. If u are ok with waiting i will take ur commission after May 2010. If u find other artists already i am fine with that.

I am not exactly sure.... so u want me to just panel for you and u do the finish? Or do u want to rough it out and i do the finish? Or is it a back and forth, you rough first draft, i panel, then you finish? The price will be different depending.

I put up the first chapter's script and character/setting descripitons here: [link] if you want to take a look. Unfortunately, that's all I have in script format right now. So basically the wait's no problem, I'm just looking for an estimate at the moment.

Basically I would have you rough it out, and I would finish it from there. I might ask your input on some roughs sometimes. Just give me a quick-and-dirty sketch of the layout of the pages, no need to be detailed or very large. We can go page-by-page or chapter-by-chapter, whichever works best for you.

It's this first step that contains all the elements I have trouble with: pacing, composition, choice of frame/angle, etc. My pages always seem to turn out dead-looking. Hopefully through working with you I will gradually learn the feel of these things. Practice makes perfect, after all!

scratched what i said before. So basically my job will be looking at the script and rough it, then you finish.

Do you want all these on paper or on computer is fine? That will affect the price a bit. (computer is cheaper of course)

Hm, i tried to come up with a price, but this project i will really need to do a few test pages to see how long it takes for a sequence. My idea of the price range for a 20-page chapter is around 150-200, making each page around 7.5-10 dollar.

Computer is just fine. All I really need is a way to take ideas out of your head, lol.
If that's the price, I'll have to save up, but then I've got time, right? ^.^
Remember, all I need is the bare minimum of indicating what the panels are and what goes in them. Feel free to draw shape-people (like those wooden dolls you can buy in supply stores) and write their names on the face, lol.

I can't go lower than doing 5 per page, if i go any lower there's no point for me to take the project, since i can be working on something else. After the first chapter.... when i get used to your writing, i will omit the extra charge of 30 in the beginning, putting your chapters at 100 per 20 pages. I think after about a few chapters you will be good on your own. You will be able to pick up my style of paneling.

One other thing i will do for you as well is placing the structure into the characters. From the look of your drawing you haven't loosen up yet.

in that case i will give you the lower rate. :) Maybe about 130 for the first chapter, i need to charge 30 extra for reading and thinking up the stuff... paneling wise i will keep it simple for you.

That sounds like a good system, pricing by the amount of time they want spent on a picture.

Well, it probably wouldn't work for me ^^; (I'm considering taking commissions... not that anyone would have me =P )

seems like you have a lot of work to do now lol
have a good time with it :)

Hay lady!

If you still got a slot open, I'd like to reserve one.

I'm looking at spending between $40 - $50 (not including shipping which may be a bit different since I'm in Alaska, technicaly part of the US, but shipping is still expensive to here) in traditional or CG media (your choice though I tend to prefere your tradition stuff), and of some original characters of mine (2-3) from which you can choose the ones that inspire you the most to draw or one of my characters and a charactor of yours again of your choice. Background optional?

I beleive in letting artists I commission have as much free reign as possible so its enjoyable and not a chore for them.

Please let me know ASAP if you are interested or not so I can get you the money and send you a note with the list of characters you can pick from.

Thank you so very much!

Payment, do you prefere paypal or money order? Paypal is easier for me, but can do either.

I don't think 10$ per hour is a realistic way of pricing a comission...
Sometimes I spend more than 30 hours on a pic...so...that'd be 300$

no one would pay that price online, you have to know most of your audience are poor students, you have to set a price where they can pay for it, and you have alot of competition. So That's usually under 20, if you do well you can raise prices. Find a way to cut down your own work load, to match with the price range given, just make sure it looks nice enough.

if I start commisioning, ppl would espect me to draw them the pix of quality I usually draw...that's why they probably choose me...
and I never spend less than 10 hours...
the simplest CG takes like 10 hours...and it it have a BG inclooded it could go over 20 or 30...
I could draw them simple pencil sketches and pix...I'm fast on that...
Besides...I don't know how to lower my drawing standards...I simply don't know how...all I draw end up way too detailed

You can do separated offers:

1. A single character with no background-chibi style
2. A single character with your normal style
3. Full illustration

And set them all on different price standards.
If you want to have one around 100 dollars, expect not to have business for a while, unless you have a large following like her: or her: Then you can set it at 100... That's the part about business, it doesn't matter how long you spend, your customers comes first, you only get to make your call when you are some big shots. And DA customers are mostly students, very few professionals. If you are lucky to be spoted by a professional who really like your work, you can get offical commission that usually starts at 1000, but... those deals are rare.

That's a good idea...
To make a list of what I offer and the range of prices...
If I do the list (IF I decide to do commissions) can I ask you to help me about pricing?

oh yeah...those two are really good...and I'm not even close to their skill...so I could never ask more than 40$ for a commission (the full CG ilustration)

Yes you can ask me about the pricing, and you can also look around to artists who post about commissions on their journal, what's their pricing and how many people they are getting.
Also, put up a oppertunity for people to set their own price, so you can get more deals that way.
