It's grown on me too, mainly because I think Doctor Who is super cheesy and they can't really make it any worse, hehe! I'd be annoyed if it was a character I really liked! It does highlight the problem in the media at the moment; there has been talk of making James Bond female, but you can't just gender bend a character. Like it or not, part of your personality is defined by your gender. It feels like a cheap cop-out to just swap a character's gender and expect it to work. In the case of Doctor Who his/her personality shifts with each regeneration, so you can get away with it... but still... more roles for women please! Can you imagine the backlash if they took a female lead and made it male...
