Hello! I´m officially starting right now the Second International Arts for Animal Rights Contest (IARC)! The first one was in the first half of 2012 ( mauriciokanno.deviantart.com/j… ); there was also a contest for human rights, in the second half of 2012 ( fav.me/d5fvbp3 ).
Your challenge is to create (or offer, if made since 2010) a nice piece of art supporting animal rights, doing your best to show to the world the importance of respecting ALL the animals (you´ll likely focus on just one or some of them, but I mean, please choose an animal that people usually are not respecting). You just can´t offer again the same piece already offered in the last edition of this contest, in 2012.
As last year, every kind of art will be accepted, if it fits on this demand. As I´m in deviantArt, I expect to receive mainly traditional or digital art, but I will gladly accept photography, photomanipulation, literature, or even dance, music or drama (I just suppose that the last ones should be shown on YouTube, for example).
The deadline for submissions is MAY 12th 2013 (NOT ANYMORE MARCH 31st, it was POSTPONED IN MORE ABOUT 1.5 MONTH). And the winners are expected to be announced in JUNE 2013 (not anymore April 2013).
Last year, this contest gladly received 34 entries, from 12 countries: United States (11), Germany (4), United Kingdom (4), Brazil (3), Canada (2), Austria, Croatia, France, India, Norway, Syria and Ukraine. There were: drawings and paintings in traditional art (12) or digital art (7), photographs (10), photomanipulations (4) and also a collage.
The winners last year were "Reification of Life", "Falling Cattle" and "Chicken Sandwich":

About Animal Rights
The best and simplest definition for me concerning this issue is that an animal cannot be considered a property of any human to trade, consume, kill or exploit. So they can live in freedom and respected by our species.
Just note that while animal welfare is about reduction of suffering or "happier lives" when or before animals are used or killed; animal rights is about non-use of animals at all. You can know more about it in About.com Animal Rights page ( animalrights.about.com/ ) and Abolitionist Approach ( www.abolitionistapproach.com/ ).
Votes, Winners and Exhibition
The entries will be voted by selected members of 4 selected organizations here in Sao Paulo, Brazil: the Group of Studies on Animal Rights (Geda); the Group of Studies on the Abolitionist Theory by Gary Francione (Gefran); the NGO Ethic Vegetarianism, Defense of the Animal Rights and Society (Veddas), and the team who is creating the Abolitionist Brazilian Party. And also other selected activists from other countries. The winners will be chosen this way.
The winners (and all the other entries I can) will be exhibited during the 4th Brazilian Arts for Animal Rights Annual Exhibit (Samoa!, by the Portuguese acronym), which is likely going to be held in June 2013.
So, by joining this contest, you´re allowing me to exhibit your artwork in related exhibitions (always crediting you, of course) and also use your artwork to make public this kind of contest in the media. Other people might use your art for animal rights cause too, but always telling you about that first and also crediting you.
Here you can see some photos of the 2012 Exhibit: www.facebook.com/media/set/?se… .
How to Submit
[PLEASE, CHECK THIS CAREFULLY]
If and when you´re ready to submit your artwork, please comment on this journal with a link to where I can find it (If you´re not in deviantArt, you may also e-mail me: mauricio dot kanno at gmail dot com). You can submit up to 3 artworks. I´m likely going to show all of the entries on a new folder in my Collections.
Kindly write in the info area under your artwork just a line saying that it´s an entry for the Arts for Animal Rights Contest 2013 (IARC), with a link to this journal, so that more people can know about the contest.
Also, please write on that same info area the information about which technique / material you used to make your artwork and how much time have you spent on it, ok?
At last, no mature content is allowed (for experience taught me that mature content makes it difficult to show the collected arts later...).

Selection of literature for animal rights book!
Hi! I´m inviting every writer in the world who cares for animals rights sake to submit your creations so we can publish a book about this issue! This book will be at least an e-book in Amazon, but I´d like to make a printed version also.
You can send your literature until January 31st 2014. The length of the text should be of about 8,000 characters (with spaces), which means about 1350 words or a bit more than two pages. You can submit a longer length text or more than one work, but then you should contribute more for the project (read more below).
And make sure to know what I mean by animal rights: it´s the abolitionist a
Results of the 2nd Arts for Animal Rights Contest!
Hello, dear friends! Finally, we have the results of the 2nd Arts for Animal Rights Contest - https://mauriciokanno.deviantart.com/journal/Arts-for-Animal-Rights-Contest-2013-351750213 ! A total of 26 people I trust in (about their engagement on animal rights) voted, and you can see below what they preferred!
Before reading it, please, notice that all the arts we received are so beautiful! Some arts received more points because they were preferred over others, not that the others were not good. Maybe some weren´t communicating enough about animal rights, in spite of they are very good arts, for example. Or maybe not the way people liked... A
Winner of the Contest for Human Rights
Hello, I´d like to announce the winner of my contest for Human Rights!
:thumb326011242:
I chose the artwork above, named "Protecting own beliefs", painted by RoadZero (https://www.deviantart.com/roadzero), from Ukraine!
It was selected because I think it expresses the subject of the contest in the best way, among the entries: in a delicate, positive, strong way. Moreover, I think it really shows expression, feeling of the characters, in an interesting way with her watercolour. It may not be so realistic as other entries, but I was looking more for the best convey of emotion and delicacy about the theme.
She will get the prize and everyone will get a symbolic amount of dA
