Art We Heart: Love

Thu Feb 9, 2012, 1:01 PM by mattdanna:iconmattdanna:
Art We ♥ is a hand-selected art feature, chosen by deviantART staff members, showcasing art we believe the community will enjoy.

:iconmattdanna: Some thoughts from Matt (mattdanna)

With Valentine's Day right around the corner, the word "love" is in no short supply. Stores are trying to get you to buy everything from chocolates and jewelry to vacation getaways for that special someone in your life. As someone who's been notoriously single on Valentine's Day, the L word starts to sound like nails on chalkboard leading up to the days before February 14th. Nevertheless, I thought it would be neat to explore art depicting different types of love.

In Greek culture, there are several different words for "love": philía, storgē, agápe, and éros. The Greek language distinguishes the different ways "love" is used. Philía is the type of love and affection you feel with friends and community. Storgē is the love and affection felt by family, especially parents for their children. Agápe is the unconditional and all-consuming love that felt from admiration and mutual respect. And last but certainly not least, éros is the love of passion and intimacy.

Love is complex. Love is delicate. And as we get ready for Cupid's holiday, I leave you with this quote by C.S. Lewis:
"To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket — safe, dark, motionless, airless — it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. The alternative to tragedy, or at least to the risk of tragedy, is damnation. The only place outside of Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love is Hell." - C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves

You're the greatest
Friend I'll ever know,
I care for you more than
I'll ever show.
I'm here for you,
As you're there for me,
I feel we are family,
You are a sister to me,
And as sisters can grow apart,
You'll always have a special place in my heart.
We laugh, we cry,
With you,
My fears are set aside,
Knowing there's nothing I can't face
As long as you are near.
I know that someday,
Our paths will fade away,
We will have to say goodbye,
Nothing lasts forever,
Just know this,
No matter what the end,
I feel privileged to call you

the connection never ends
and even if at times it breaks
in time it always mends
a family is like the stars

families are those who assist
who  encourage and always care
A family is like a book
the endings is never clear
but throughout the pages
the love is always there
A family is many things

who they are and what they do
and how they've taught you.

I love you for who you are
you have your flaws
but so do I
I love you for who you are
You treat me like a hero
You follow me everywhere
and you copy everything I do
But I see another hero
And that hero resides in you
You are an innocent angel
and because of that I can smile
you are a reminder that there is
at least one pure soul left in our world
I come home happy knowing that I will see
that angelic smile again
You are the closest friend I've ever known
And you know me like your favorite book
I can be what I truly am
and never fear ridicule
because I am with you.
I love you
my little sister.

And instead of that piece, there's little broken pieces of other hearts. And when you date someone, you give them back their piece of heart and they give you yours. That's why you love each other. You love the feeling of being whole again. But then you break up and those pieces are gone forever. You both lost some of your heart. But then you find the next person.  And the process repeats. Someday, you won't have any pieces of other's hearts left. You will have used them all up. It's just your heart left with a hole in it.
But then you meet Him. And you love each other without giving back the missing pieces of heart. You love each other as you are, broken and missing. And when you are together forever, you  willingly take a piece of your heart and give it to Him. And He does the same for you. Your hearts are never complete now, but they don't have to be. You live because the other person lives

It's been so long.
I'm writing now
For you to know
I'm thinking of you
As these letters meet your eyes.
You might not remember me,
I'm probably just a memory
Or a secret
You know nothing about.
Yet I think of you
Every morning when I wake,
Every evening when I dine.
I remember your voice
So well,
As if it were my own.
I do not ask for much.
I never have
And never will.
But I've a request for you
And only you.
Would you be so kind
To meet me
One last time?
You already know
The dwellings of my heart.
Till then,
Your stranger.

I like Valentines day, it gives me a chance to show how much I care about and appreciate all my family and friends. The only sad thing is that I never have had anyone to share "that day" with. I'm so happy that everyone else is happy, but I envy them a bit. Is it too much to ask the universe to help me be happy too?

I love how you incorporated the different types of Greek love in there :) As a Greek-American, it made my day. I love Valentine's Day, because I feel closer to friends and family, and to those special someones in our lives :). I look forward to it every year, and I was totally ready for it. However, it makes me sad, because it seems Valentines day in the US, especially among us youth, has become more about the stuff than the emotion. What did he/she do? What did he/she say? It's all about the acts, not the emotion behind the acts. Our local news broadcasted the average amount of money spent by a single American this year was $139. I would be happier with a thoughtful and heartfelt card, not a stuffed bear, a nice piece of jewelry, or a dinner. Those can all be lost, forgotten, but words, promises, emotions, those are what is eternal, and I feel Americans have lost sight of that :( It makes me sad

I'm from Mexico, but currently I'm living in Australia. In Mexico Valentine's Day stand for love and friendship.Every year I look forward to it because there's always someone special (as a friend) who I'd like to thank him/her for his/her friendship. I don't have anyone who loves me in the romantic way, but I have a lotof good friends.

Here in Australia I've heard that people don't do big celebrations for Valentine's, that it's only for couples. They give each other a small gift (like a chocolate or a rose) and that's it pretty much.

And the bad thing is that I'm not ready for Valentines :tears: but today I'm going shopping for chocolates for my friends (the ones that came with me from Mexico and the ones that I've made since I came to Australia)

- Am I ready? Now that high and middle schools have blown off the parties we use to have, theres really nothing to get ready for.
- Well, I like the holiday to be honest, but I'm not looking forward to seeing every underaged couple in our school kissing 'till their lips hurt. I see enough of it between the buses after school. o-o
- I live in America. It's self-explanatory. .___.

-Are you ready for Valentine's Day?
No, but anyway I dont´ have to. I´m single and we have exams at university in this time.
- Do you look forward to Valentine's Day?
No XD Here, it´s only for people which are in love with each other, no relatives or friends or something.
- Do you celebrate Valentine's Day in your country?
Yes, but as I already said, it´s only for partners. I would find it wonderful if people here would spend time together even just as friends, but I have the feeling that everyone else would find it weird.

Eh Valentines Day is a little painful for me, because my significant other lives 6000 miles away. Seeing other people together sometimes makes me a little jelous.

He applied to have take the day off from work so we could skype, but now has two classes that day. Plus the time difference, and we won't be talking much.

I don't think people give valentines day enough credit. Yes, it is too commersalized now a days, but it defiantly was not created by the card companies. There actually was a St. Valentine. This is the most commonly accepted story:

"One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death."

Found at [link] go there for more information about valentines day origins =)

This was very nicely put together. I think showing the different meanings (and languages) of the word love, shows a great respect for the history of our language. English has one word that can mean many different things, while the Greeks gave each meaning it's own word, and you did a great job of showing it!

Q: Are you ready for Valentine's Day?
A: Heck yes! It's not so much the gifts that I want, it's the undivided attention from my beloved.

Q: Do you look forward to Valentine's Day?
A: It's a holiday I used to loath because it is also my parents anniversary (25 years incase anyone is wondering) and being they want alone time, I always end up babysitting my younger siblings. This year everyone is finally old enough that I don't have to, so my fiance and I finally don't have to have early plans or late plans to work around my parents.

Q: Do you celebrate Valentine's Day in your country?
A: I live in America, the Hallmark Holiday is rather known here. :giggle:
Ratseipgam Featured By Owner Feb 10, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
To be honest I don't believe in love. XD I believe in the mating instinct, and that we are pack animals with social habits. :3 But everyone knows I'm a hypocrite.
AnimationFan Featured By Owner Feb 10, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
My country celebrates Valentine's Day, and I like the idea behind it and all, but shouldn't you be able to show your love for someone/something every day? It just seems like a Hallmark holiday to me, no offense. It has become way too commercial for my tastes.

So yes, I am ready to wreck everything corny, cheesy or cliché with my sarcasm on Valentine's Day, and no I am DEFINITELY not looking forward to it. I never have, and I never will.

So I agree with =prosaix on this one :P
