(Destiny) This Is What Loss Feels Like by Mattatatta (Destiny) This Is What Loss Feels Like by Mattatatta
And in the closing weeks of the year, I quietly finish my last piece for an artbook for Destiny: A Tale of Unicorn Wings, an album composed entirely by HeyLasFas.

The year has not been very good to me for maintaining motivation and good cheer. Completing this project, however, has lifted my spirits. I started to really enjoy working on this last piece, because things just started to slide together and fit, and it started to feel like those times I'd draw something whilst running purely on inspiration because I should've been asleep hours ago. The project itself was something that has definitely impacted my life in a positive way, it's just typical that real life decided to nose-dive at the same time.

I want to apologise to everyone who has been waiting for my role in the project to finally meet its end. I've taken far longer than I wanted to to create the Destiny artwork you see throughout my dA gallery, and I appreciate your patience. I also want to thank you for sticking with me and showing your support whilst I was trying to balance drawing with dealing with real-life problems.

As far as I know, Heylasfas still has some preorder copies of Destiny left. And since my work is pretty much complete, the physical album shall be off to production in the coming weeks. And will probably be heading out for delivery in the New Year. So if you're somebody who'd like to grab a physical copy of this wonderful album - complete with an artbook featuring my artwork seen here - then follow the first link in this description to bandcamp!

Ah, Silent Dusk. Kinda odd to finish the project on her, but that's how things fell into place. Now I was not the first person to come up with a design for this Nightmarish corruption of Twilight Sparkle, not by a long shot, and I did not design Silent Dusk completely from scratch. I took great inspiration from (mylittlepulmo.tumblr.com/post/… mylittlepulmo's design of Silent Dusk, and used the design as a base for my own. It is only right I give credit right here for that fact.

There's a few things going on here that are references to songs in the album, including a metaphor/easter egg hidden in the image for sharp-eyed musicians. To talk about them would spoil the fun, so I'll leave that to you to discover!

Silent Dusk's mane at first didn't feel like it was going to work, but I'm very happy with the end result and glad I kept at it instead of trying something else. I felt that keeping Twilight's old mane as opposed to doing a wispy, smoky manestyle as seen with Nightmare Moon and Nightmarity would keep Silent Dusk tied closer to Twilight Sparkle. I did choose to keep the starry effect that Nightmare Moon's mane had, and expanded upon it to include its own ethereal effects and lighting within the mane and tail, hopefully creating something very unique and interesting in the process.

Faves, comments, shares and so on are much appreciated. Thanks so much for reading this far down and for taking the time to look at my artwork! Be sure to listen to the album too!

I wonder who can create the best Nightmare version of the Mane 6? Just a suggestion.

Of course they would think that, it has been over a year now since the last update.
They only thing I can do to prove that I'm working on it is to publish a new chapter. No point in making any announcements or teasers or WIP shots or anything. An actual update is what people will want by now- nothing else.
I'm not going to say much about plans or anything until I've got a chapter out. If I can write a new chapter, then I can write the rest of the story.

You're right about the music! There's a motif transcribed in this image taken from the album I linked to. It plays specifically near the start of the opening track, but more relevantly in the middle of track #14 "One Last Time" @ 6.32 (after Fluttershy's monologue to Silent Dusk/Twilight).

I recognized the Easter egg, but not the tune, not the most obvious melody from the piece.

Fair enough. It's my personal favourite melody and I wanted to transcribe it since the illustration covers roughly the same point of the story told in the album.
Heylasfas packed a strong selection of motifs and melodies to harken back to in the later tracks, which is part of the reason why the album is so good at telling the story it tells. Some people would obviously have their favourite parts that differ from others. I kinda digress here, so I'll just say I'm glad you spotted the Easter egg!

"Heylasfas packed a strong selection of motifs and melodies to harken back to in the later tracks" Exactly. I agree with your choice for the picture, but this particular melody wasn't repeated as much as some others ones in the piece.

Yeah, it appears prominently at the very beginning of the album, and very prominently towards the end, other motifs had a lot more appearances, so it stands to reason they'd be remembered easier.

To me, this particular melody speaks to me more. It's six notes, one for each pony in the Mane Six, and when played in track #14, solidifies its symbolic meaning for the core friendship and harmony between them. The reason why, in my mind at least, that this melody only appears twice is because the the album's story sees that core structure broken up, which plays a detrimental role in Twilight turning into Silent Dusk (her Nightmare form). For that motif to later appear as the punchline to Fluttershy's heartfelt appeal to Silent Dusk (and Twilight within), the listeners are reminded of the Mane Six prior to Destiny, and so understand what causes Twilight to change back to normal and reunite with her friends - their relationships stronger than ever.

Maybe I'm a sucker for such things, but even though the melody sounds so somber and little, it earnestly represents something that is positive and healthy and as natural as breathing, whereas the other motifs in the album represent stress and conflict. For Twi to go from being with her friends, to facing all of these insecurities and failures and consequences until she fell apart in loneliness, only to have a little, sincere melody represent what tipped her back onto the right path, just feels so much more powerful than growling guitars and booming basslines. It carries a message that resonates with me, and it only needed to appear twice in a two-hour concept album to deliver it.
