Drider by MatesLaurentiu Drider by MatesLaurentiu
I didn't felt like working on my commissions today so I just took upon me to work on a d&d character that stayed in my mind since I read "Dark Elf". I can honestly say I never seen a Drider design to really like. None of the ones I saw impose on me the feeling of utter evil, decay and danger that Salvatore's description of the driders left me with. So I dedicate this image to R.A. Salvatore, who brought me the hope that even in the darkest places of evil, a light can be born, too all my friends which whom I shared countless nights of d&d adventures and to the memory of Gary Gygax and J.R.R Tolkien, to whom we owe the fun.

Yes! An ugly drider! They always get drawn so gorgeous- we need ones that look like they were actually *described* for counterbalance...!

Yup, a PROPER drider. I'm kind of tired of all the beautiful ones that popped all over the place.

Finally! A drider that repels me.
Awesome job on making every part of this drider creepy as f*ck.
Next time I read about driders, I will have your design in mind and shiver.

I think freaky is when they look the best. Never could see them as the beautiful half spider elves. :P

Compliments to your talent. The artwork is done very well. Although I sometimes rp as a drider, and I use the D&D interpretation. Aka, attractive drow female with the lower body of a spider. Like a Centaur. It is true that such a thing was intended to be a punishment, but some driders were considered holy and elevated above other drow. And others came by their predicament in other ways...shapeshifting or such. Thus driders aren't always cursed beings. And certainly not always evil.

From the module "Queen of the Demonweb Pits" and the AD&D Monster Manual II

"A drider appears to be a cross between a giant spider and a drow. The torso, head, and arms of a pale, bloated drow sprout 8 spider legs. Due to the bloated form, it is impossible to distinguish the sex of a drider, but 60% of those encountered will be female."

the above IS the D&D interpretation (although admittedly there is plenty of fan-service art in D&D modules showing big busted spider babes).

I don't know if the descriptive text in later editions changed, but judging from the art they used in the 3.5 ed monster manual I'm guessing not.

As I stated, I followed the description and reasoning given by Mr. Salvatore in his book. In the books there are no good driders, they look pretty much like undead drow stuck to a spider body and its clear the drow making its a punishement as those drow failed in their duties or mission. Your description looks a lot like how D&D justified their mythos and I have nothing against it. I was just more impressed with Savatore's description of a drider since it fits much better the drow society and frame of mind.

All the classic drider designs have half a drow stuck onto a giant spider. But here it actually looks like spider and elf have merged together into a single beast! Way better than the usual Drider! :D

I'm glad you like it. And yes, I tried to keep close to Salvatore's description rather than the game edit. In Salvatore's book, becoming the Drider was a punishment. In the D&D game it became a reward.

Nu vreau sa retusez mai mult decat e necesar, deja e plnin de detalii plus ca e bine sa se vada acolo putin mana artistului, nu trebuie sa fie absolut perfect. :)

My thoughts exactly. I tried to keep as close as possible to the description Drizzt had the first time he encountered a drider.

Thank you, I'm glad you like it. Yes, I was kind of sick and tired myself of the black, beautiful elfs with spider bodies and wanted to see something more as it was described in the book. So I came up with this one. :D

I didnt read the book, but from the games such as BG2 or Nvn I remember, that being a drider was a curse, not favor ;]

Many forgot that hence the invasion of pretty white hair dark elves with spider bodies. I guess reading the book stuck in my mind that sensation of dread everybody had when meeting a drider. So I guess I kept to that and avoided making any pretty thing.

This is absolutely stunning. You're really taken the creature and redefined it as a "monster", rather than simply drow + spider = drider.

It was my intention and I'm glad you like it. Salvatore described them as monsters and, as a fantasy enthusiast and d&d player I wanted to put in them the horror of the transformation and of the encounter.

My idea was to seem like he's still shedding his elf skin while transforming into the drider. The thought seemed creepy enough to make it into the drawing.
