The Eye of Glaurung by MatejCadil The Eye of Glaurung by MatejCadil
"As she climbed so the fog grew thinner, until she came at last out into the sunlight on the bare summit. Then she stepped forward and looked westward. And there right before her was the great head of Glaurung, who had even then crept up from the other side; and before she was aware her eyes had looked in the fell spirit of his eyes, and they were terrible, being filled with the fell spirit of Morgoth, his master. Strong was the will and heart of Niënor, and she strove against Glaurung; but he put forth his power against her."
~ J. R. R. Tolkien: The Children of Húrin

charcoal and watercolour

This idea came to me as a sudden inspiration (though it was prompted by the monthly challenge "A princess and a dragon" at Projekt ilustrace) and I immediately knew that this is something I must paint. :-)

I really enjoyed this combination of techniques, I think they fit very well with it: the rough charcoal drawing with bold shading for the scales and the soft watercolour for the eye. I live working with charcoal, it always amazes me, how easily the shading is done with it, I find it great especially for things like this - scales, rocks, stony walls.

So I hope I managed to capture Glaurung's evil eye well. What do you think? :-)

Hello there, I would first off like to on the overall dragon appearance/shading. I love the different sizes and shapes of the scales that you use in this drawing. I honestly think that your use of shading in the scales is very well done because I get the illusion that some scales overlap with others with the dark lines between each scales. However, I would love a bit more directional lighting as this drawing doesn't seem to show where exactly the light is coming from... if the sun was right in front of this eye (aka behind the princess), then the scales on the top-right side of the drawing would not be so dark. A more dramatic use of lighting (lets say the light from the right of the drawing) would add dynamism and contrast within the piece.

As for the eye itself... I love the concept of seeing the reflection of the princess in the eye. However, the realism of the scales surrounding the eye and the eye itself does not match. I understand what you were going for here, but I feel that some slight changes could add further impact. The one thing that really stands out to me when I view this piece is the fact that there needs to be an iris/pupil! If I were really looking at a dragon's eye, I would see first the surrounding colour of the eye, then the dark slit for the pupil, and finally the reflection in the pupil/iris. Please refer to this image of a cat's eye to see what I mean www.brianjudgephoto.com/awards….

Overall, I think that this is quite a good charcoal/watercolour drawing. Please keep doing what your doing and I hope to see more like this in the future :)

Hello! I'm from ProjectComment
I very much enjoy this drawing, the lack of color around the eye fits perfectly with the great shading, the color inside the eyeball really pops around it. The person inside the eyeball is well drawn, I am not sure how large this drawing (if so forgiven e if this is a mistake) through the drawing itself is really REALLY good, human inside, while well drawn, doesn't really fit, it just comes off as a bit unrealistic compared to the other pretty realistic parts of the drawing. Depending on the size of the drawing I can forgive certain aspects of that and either way its a pretty well-drawn human for its style and doesn't hurt the drawing in a big way, more of a nitpick if anything.
This is a very well done drawing, the shading, colors, and amount of detail very much impress me and I can tell you put a lot of work and time into it, as well as most likely years of work building the style, which are things I always put into my reviews / critiques of art, I'd give this a solid 7/10 (which is very good in my book) nice work, I'll be happy to see what you continue to make as an artist.

Hello, my friend,

I am from ProjectComment and I love pictures of dragons and love people who can draw dragons. The concept you chose for the picture - a person reflected in a dragon's eye - is well chosen and looks absolutely epic. I assume that this picture took a lot of time. But it was worth it for you. The red of the dragon's eye stands in absolute contrast to the black-white scales, which were shaded so well that a great 3D effect was created. Unfortunately, the eye itself looks a bit flat. The person is clearly visible in the eye, but I miss the pupil and the light reflections that make it really alive. Otherwise I love the picture and the theme. I'm a big J.R.Tolkien and Lord of the Rings fan. And I think you're honoring the author in your paintings. Keep up the good work.

Thank you, I am glad I was successful in depicting the scales. I used several reference pictures, both photos of real-life snakes and lizards and paintings of dragons, so I myself learned a lot in the process! :-)

Thanks! I appreciate that. I’m hoping to reference and draw enough scales to get to where I don’t require reference material.
