Peter: Throughout our generation, intelligence has been...none existent lately.
John: But these two are the embodiments of intelligence.
Peter: That's certainly debatable.
John: Don't care. It sounded cool. But I'm not wrong!
Peter: You certainly aren't. These two are two of the most intelligent characters. Phoenix Wright, Ace Attorney.
John: And Professor Layton, the smartest man in London. He's Peter, and I'm John.
Peter: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armor, and skills to see who'd win, a Death Battle.
Peter: Phoenix Wright's backstory is...well, unclear. A bit, anyway.
John: In grade school, Phoenix was accused of stealing lunch money from Miles Edgeworth. So, there was a class trial for this 'case'.
Peter: Just when it seemed all hope was lost, or something, Miles Edgeworth himself stepped in to defend Wright along with Larry Butz.
John: Larry...'Butz'? That's not a typo in the script, is it?
Peter: No, it's his actual name.
John: Ok. There can't be a worse name than that.
Peter: Well, there was a man named Frank Sawit. Also Luke Atmey and Shelly de Killer.
John: I stand corrected...Capcom's getting worse at this.
Peter: Anyway, after the class trial, Phoenix, Miles, and Larry all became best friends. Miles had a dream, though. He would become a Defense Attorney like his father....buuuut his dad died in the unsolved D-L6 incident.
John: Afterwards, Wright wouldn't see Edgeworth again for a looong time. Unfortunately, Wright's luck just...just sucked.
Peter: When he attended collage at Ivy University, he was framed for murder.
John: Poor guy. Well, at least he had a good Defense Attorney there to save the day!
Peter: This was Mia Fey, a rookie Defense Attorney. She not only defended him, though, eventually she took Wright under her wing when he became a rookie Defense Attorney.
John: Thus, this basically where Phoenix's story begins.
Background:
-Name: Phoenix Wright.
-Age: 35.
-Height: 5'9"
-Alias: Nick.
-Defense Attorney.
-Can't play the piano.
John: Things went smoothly for Wright at first. His first day of being an Attorney and he already won the first case to save Larry Butz.
Peter: However, tragedy struck. That night, Mia Fey was killed and her younger sister, Maya Fey, was being accused of it.
John: So, not only was it Wright's second time to be a Defense Attorney, he also had to defend Maya against Miles Edgeworth, who became a Prosecutor.
Peter: Despite his inexperience, Phoenix was able to successfully defend Maya and eventually himself. Long story.
John: Now, Wright's way of fighting...is...interesting...
Peter: See, because he's a Defense Attorney, he has no real way to fight...however, Wright is very intelligent. Being able to find contradictions in testimonies easily and pretty quickly.
John: While the speed of how he figures things out is kinda up to the player, the anime is a lot more efficient at showing us what he's got.
Peter: Also, for some reason Phoenix was put in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3...for whatever reason. Here, he got his own moveset which is again, interesting.
John: Good old Nick is able to attack by sneezing, tripping, or by tapping his backhand on pieces of paper or throwing them. Because...reasons.
Peter: And if that's not enough, Phoenix can...shout loudly at people. This does seem not at all effective, but in Wright's case, he can shout loud enough to knock people down, blow the arms and head of a puppet off, destroy a cane, or shake an entire court room. He can literally use his words to hurt people.
John: Wonder how he lungs hasn't collapsed by doing that. All this guy ever does is shout at people.
Peter: Mostly in court. His strength is pretty normal, about average even. He is capable of breaking down locked doors in one go, and can push aside guards.
John: But if his strength doesn't show anything, his durability will.
Peter: Phoenix has constantly shrugged off coffee being thrown at his face by Godot, and he doesn't even suffer from 3rd, 2nd, or even 1st degree burns.
John: He can also tank constant whips from Franziska Van Karma without suffering any damage. Why is this impressive?
Peter: Normal people's skins are very fragile. According to cowboys who normally uses whips on a daily bases, the snapping sound of a whip is actually a mini sonic boom.
John: That's right, whips can break the sound barrier. Take that Scout! Whips are faster!
Peter: Phoenix Wright carriers around certain tools with him to help him during court and investigation. But in this case, they can also be used for battles.
Items:
Magatama:
-A Kurain artifact.
-Can be used to see when a person is lying.
--If said person is lying, Pyschlocks will appear.
-In Project X-Zone 2, is infused with
Magic from Morrigan Aensland.
--Kinda the reason for his fighting style.
---Because of this, Pyschlocks will deal damage to people when they're broken.
Evidence:
-Used to prove contradictions in court.
-In Marvel vs Capcom 3, can be used as projectiles.
--Knife creates three small projectiles that fly forward.
--Watch creates a fast and durable ball projectile that goes a decent amount of distance.
--Folder creates a small moving ball, but it floats above Phoenix.
--Vase creates a fast moving projectile that files upward.
--Photo creates a small and fast moving projectile. Easy to dodge, however.
--Phones creates three small projectiles in front of Wright. They won't move for a while, but will eventually home in on an opponent.
-Phoenix can only carry 3 things of Evidence at a time.
-Can only pick them up in Investigation Mode.
-Can also freeze enemies in place.
Bad/False Evidence:
-Chance Phoenix might run into some.
-Have no real special abilities.
-Wright can through them to deal damage.
Steel Samurai and Pink Princess:
-Heroes of Neo-Old Tokyo.
--All they do is lunge at the foe.
-Probably won't be used due to unnecessary outside help, but worth mentioning.
Missile:
-Calm down. Its just a dog that lunges at people.
-Also unnecessary outside help.
John: Now that's a lot of abilities. Thanks fighting games. Who knew that a defense attorney would be able to do all of this?
Peter: Well, Wright doesn't just have those. He also has Investigation Mode, Trial Mode, and finally, Turnabout Mode.
Modes:
Investigation Mode:
-Focused on gathering Evidence rather than fighting enemies.
-Can shout 'Hold It' to attack opponents.
Trial Mode:
-More offensive than Investigation Mode.
-Gains 'Order in the Court' in where a scary version of the Judge slams his hammer down on Wright and the opponent.
--Wright doesn't suffer damage, and all possible Bad Evidence is taken away.
-Can also shout 'Hold It', but it freezes the enemy.
Turnabout Mode:
-Can only be used in Trial Mode and when 3 things of good Evidence is found.
-Activates by shouting 'Objection' at the opponent.
-Becomes extremely offensive and almost uncounterable.
-Gains 'Ace Attorney'.
-Convicts the opponent, presents evidence, and finishes off with a 'Take That'.
--One of the most devastating Level 3 Hyper Combos in MvC3.
John: What the hell? Why is Wright so goddamn op?
Peter: Well, that's not all Phoenix has. We're bringing in his assistant, the younger sister to Mia Fey, Maya.
Background:
-Name: Maya Fey.
-Age: 28.
-Height: 5'1"
-Alias: Mystic Maya.
-Master of the Kurain Channeling Technique.
-Loves Burgers.
-Cousin: Pearl Fey.
John: Maya is very useful in combat.
Peter: She normally attacks by tripping on accident, but she's able to benefit Wright in multiple different ways.
Moves/Abilities:
Shield:
-Used in MvC3.
-Maya creates a shield to protect Wright.
--Very useful for Investigation Mode.
-Can block almost anything....almost.
-Can only block from the front.
-Lasts for only a few seconds.
Kurain Channeling Technique:
-Can channel spirits of the deceased.
-Mostly channels Mia Fey.
-Has mastered this technique.
-Very useful for getting out of sticky situations.
Steel Samurai Maya Smelting:
-The Level 1 Hyper Combo.
-Maya runs towards the opponent, arms flailing around.
-Useful to gain distance between Phoenix and the opponent.
John: Oh. Well damn.
Peter: Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey have done many, and we mean many ridiculous feats.
Feats (Phoenix Wright):
-Has won almost every case he's taken.
-Manages to do his job efficiently even when he's under intense pressure.
--Like when Maya was kidnapped and Shelly de Killer threatened Phoenix to make the case reach a non guilty verdict.
-Managed to beat prosecutor Manfred van Karma, who had a no-loss record.
-Solved the unsolvable D-L6 incident.
-Stopped Police Chief Damon Gant's manipulation of the law.
-Saved Maya from Shelly de Killer while also proving his client not guilty at the same time.
-Proved Godot guilty of Misty Fey's murder.
-Has won poker games for 7 years without losing.
--Note that Trucy, his adopted daughter, helped with most games.
-Was a mentor figure for Apollo Justice and Athena Cykes.
-Outsmarted and convicted Kristoph Gavin, the man who's responsible for making Phoenix lose his badge.
-Proved the Phantom guilty of the UR-1 incident.
-Solved the mystery of Labyrinthia alongside Professor Layton.
-Took a beating from Furio Tigre and Jean Armstrong.
-Was tased unconscious by a 600,00 volt taser.
-Survived being clobbered by a fire extinguisher.
--Had amnesia for a bit afterwards.
-Ate a glass bottle that has traces of poison.
--Had no negative side effects afterwards.
-Fell from a burning bridge into a freezing river.
--Said river is said to sweep away those who fall in it.
---Wright only got a cold because of it.
-Was hit by a car, which flung him thirty feet, and hit his head on a telephone pole.
--Only got a sprained ankle as a result.
-Tanked a TNT explosion followed by Luke Triton falling on his back.
Feats (Maya Fey):
-Also took the 600,000 volt taser like Phoenix.
-Has helped Phoenix out with numerous cases.
-Took a piece of Evidence from Manfred van Karma that proved him guilty.
-Mastered the Kurain Channeling Technique.
-Saved herself from a plot done by Morgen Fey and Dahlia Hawthorne to kill her.
--Did so by channeling Dahlia herself.
John: Surely, this duo is unstoppable!
Peter: If only that were true. A lot in the times, pretty much all the time, actually, Phoenix's victories are more due to luck or someone bringing in Evidence late.
John: So...they have-
Weaknesses:
-Both are very inexperienced in actual combat.
-Although they posses incredible feats, are still human.
-Rely on bluffing and/or luck when backed into a corner.
-Investigation Mode is more focused on Evidence rather than offense.
-Chance of picking up Bad Evidence.
-Turnabout Mode can only last for a short while.
-Ace Attorney ends Turnabout Mode.
--Dangerous if the opponent isn't already defeated.
-Wright once forged Evidence before losing his badge.
John: Hey! Don't cut me off like that you mother fu-
Peter: Despite their flaws, you can always count on Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey to save the day........in court.
Phoenix Wright: "A coffee-loving prosecutor once said: Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains must be the truth."
Peter: Detectives are often great at what they do. They're always solving problems, cases, or just puzzles.
John: When you think of detectives, you'd probably think Sherlock Holmes or even Batman, but this detective, or professor, is one of the most intelligent.
Peter: Hershel Layton was born under the name Theodore Bronev to Leon and Rachel Bronev.
John: He lived happily with his older brother Hershel. The family was happy, but of course, you can't have a good character without shit happening in their life.
Peter: For poor Theodore, it was his parents being kidnapped by the Target agency.
John: I knew the world would be taken over by Target! Damn you and your prices!
Peter: What? No. it's not that Target. The Target Agency took Leon and Rachel because they apparently had the knowledge about Azran Civilization.
John: Because of this, Theodore and Hershel were orphans.
Peter: Like any orphan brothers, they wanted to get adoption parents. Roland and Lucille Layton were those parents, and it seemed like their wishes were granted. Well, only half granted.
John: See, Roland and Lucille want only one of the two, that being Hershel. But they didn't know which orphan was Hershel. So naturally, you'd think the actual Hershel would be greedy and go with the truth. But nope. This is the world of fiction where people actually DO nice things for one another.
Peter: In this case, Hershel gave Theodore his name so he could be happy and adopted. From that day onward, Theodore Bronev became the famous Hershel Layton.
Professor Hershel Layton:
-Name: Hershel Layton.
-Previous name: Theodore Bronev.
-Age: 37.
-Height (Hat included): 5'9"
-Alias: Professor, Hershel.
-Expert at playing piano.
-Loves solving puzzles.
-Has an extra top hat in his place. Never know when you might need a spare.
Peter: Together with his new parents, Hershel Layton lived in the quiet and peaceful town known as Stansbury.
John: He lived most of his childhood here and did daily things, like going to Kingsbrook Academy, hanging out with two kids named Randell and Angela, and sneaking out of the house at night to investigate the Akbadain ruins. Ya know, daily teen stuff.
Peter: Of course, Layton's as well as Randell's poor choices led only to disaster. Layton accidentally activated a trap, making Randell fall down a seemingly endless pit and was presumed to be dead.
John: So Layton was all like 'f**ck this shit I'm out!' and moved away from Stansbury.
Peter: Hershel Layton went to Gressenheller University and met two other students, Don Paolo and Clark Triton.
John: Meh. Forget them two, the real benefit to Layton's kinda 3rd life was meeting the women Claire. They eventually started a relationship and on their anniversary, Claire got Layton a neat and iconic top hat.
Peter: However, because it's Hershel Layton, something bad had to happen. Claire died in an explosion later that day, so Layton decided to wear the hat for the rest of his life as to be a 'perfect gentlemen'.
John: That's the whole thing with this guy. He's always being a 'true gentleman' and always doing gentlemanly things. Open up doors, like a true gentleman. Drinking awful tea, like a true gentleman. Fighting using a sword! Like a true gentleman.
Peter: Yes. You heard it. Professor Layton can use a sword in combat. And he's really damn good with it.
John: Hell yeah he is! He's able to slice robotic knights in pieces without any trouble! Like a true gentleman.
Peter: Not only that, but he's agile enough to jump off a back of said robot knight to get the sword thrown to him.
John: He's fast enough to dodge sword swings, and smart enough to solve any kind of puzzle. Like, oh I don't know, an entire village full of them...and a golden apple.
Peter: Professor Layton prides himself on solving puzzles and will never turn one down, even during a murder case.
John: Like a true gentleman.
Peter: Enough of that!...Anyway...Professor Layton doesn't often get into fights, but when he does, he's not afraid to throw a few punches.
John: Who cares about fits when he can wield something deadlier and more badass. Professor Layton's preferred style of combat is a sword.
Peter: His actual skill with a blade is debatable, but it seems he's more adept to a fencing style with a blade rather than other sword fighters.
John: If a sword is out of the question, Layton with use whatever long and blunt object to substitute for it.
Peter: Even then, he can improvise and create weapons. Such as a coin machine gun from a random group of slot machine parts.
John: So not only is he skilled with swords, he can create machine guns with nothing but slot machine parts.. That's insane.
Peter: I'd go more with absurd.
Skills and Abilities:
Amazing intelligence:
-Has solved a lot of puzzles without fail.
-Can solve extremely difficult ones first glance.
Sword skills:
-More preferred method of combat.
-Very skilled in fencing.
-Can deliver multiple thrusts in a short amount of time.
Absurd mechanical ingenuity:
-Can make weapons or other contraptions with whatever's around him.
-Coin machine gun. Nuff said.
John: However, Layton doesn't always fight alone. He has his underling, Luke to help out.
Background:
-Name: Luke Triton.
-Age: 13.
-Height: 5'1"
-Professor Layton's apprentice.
Peter: Name sound familiar? Luke is the son of Clark Triton. Go figure.
John: That was...awkward.
Peter: I know..
John: Well, during a fight, well, Luke isn't a fighter. He does make up for it be helping out Layton in tough situations. Take for an example when he got a sword and threw it it to Layton during the robot knight fight.
Peter: Other than that, while Luke is capable of fighting, he's not all that good, especially when going up against more dangerous foes. Plus, he can get angry often and would need Layton to calm him down.
John: But when these two work together, you can guarantee they'll solve any puzzle that comes their way.
Feats (Layton):
-Intelligence is nearly unparalleled.
-Catches people lying just based on their emotions.
-Can stay very calm in very stressful situations.
-Moves are basically perfect, making sure to never go in head first or making assumptions that would backfire.
-Made flying machines
-COIN MACHINE GUN. I cannot strain that enough.
-Has fought Randall, robotic knights and mummies, an immortal vampire, and Descole.
-Was able to 'fight against' the Story Teller's book.
--The Story Teller is no reality warper, but appeared to be so in the eyes of many.
-Uncovered remains of 2 lost civilizations.
-Discovered the hidden treasure of the Golden Apple.
-Prevented the destruction of 3 major cities.
-Outsmarted witches.
-Solved the mystery of Labyrinthia with Phoenix Wright.
Feats (Luke):
-Survived the same TNT explosion as Wright, but not to the same degree.
-Has solved many difficult puzzles himself.
-Has helped out Layton with many different cases.
John: As great and gentlemenly these two are, they're not all that.
<da:embed id="MNzm5xLoPMk" profile="youtube" width="560" height="315">
Weaknesses:
-Layton kinda lacks in durability.
-While Layton is skilled at fighting, he doesn't fight often.
-Luke Is hotheaded and often needs to be disciplined.
-Luke is not as good as solving puzzles than Layton.
-Luke just...isn't good at fighting.
-Both are still human.
Peter: Whatever their faults, you can always count on Professor Layton and Luke Triton to solve whatever puzzle is out there.
John: Like a true gentleman.
Professor Layton: "Story Teller. I'm afraid that the power of your pen, is no longer absolute."
