Description

Here is the inked version of my 1980s Villains Banner/Wallpaper!

The stipulations for who was presented and which cartoons were omitted is as follows.

1. The cartoon had to have been on air between January 1, 1980 and up to December 31, 1989.
2. Has to be a cartoon series and not a stand alone movie. Five episode pilot mini series counts.
3. The cartoon had to have been made to sell merchandise such as toys, games and/or comic books.
4. The cartoons had to be made for USA release and not a dubbing of a foreign cartoon or anime. So if you are wondering "Where is Voltron?!" who was one of the most popular boy toys of the early 80s this is why. Voltron was imported and dubbed from the anime Beast King GoLion. Vehicle Voltron was the same but from a different anime called Armored Fleet Dairugger XV. Also there is no Robotech because it was imported from Macross and another series. Ditto for Battle of the Planets, Star Blazers, Captain Harlock, Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs, Tranzor-Z and probably more which I never saw or can't remember.
5. No Disney cartoon characters. So no Ducktales, Gummi Bears or Chip n' Dale: Rescue Rangers.
6. No "cutesy" nonhumanoid characters. So no My Little Pony, Pound Puppies, Care Bears, etc. EDIT: Coily was added in to fill in a void.
7. Each character should be the "leader" or the arch villain of a cartoon. Some of the heroes never had a single arch villain to go against.
8. No cartoons aimed at girls. Why? Well look at what I have posted to Deviant Art prior to this piece and one will see over 300 female drawings which almost covers ALL cartoons aimed towards girls.

Using these criteria helped me manage to pare down the list of characters to 36. Below is a list of the characters and their corresponding cartoon in case someone is wondering.

01. The Transformers (1984) - Megatron / edit: was the original leader when the series started
02. The Challenge of the Gobots (1984) - Cy-Kill

04. Robotix (1987) - Nemesis

06. The Real Ghostbusters (1986) - Stay Puft (technically not the arch villain but was Gozer)
07. G.I. Joe (1983) - Cobra Commander / edit: was the original leader when the series started
08. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) - Shredder / edit: was the original leader from the comic books

25. Filmation Ghostbusters (1986) - Prime Evil
26. C.O.P.S. (1988) - Big Boss
27. The Centurions: Power Xtreme (1986) - Doc Terror
28. Bionic Six (1987) - Dr. Scarab

35. Captain N: The Game Master (1989) - Mother Brain
36. Q*Bert (1983) - Coily

So who is missing? Serpentor, Galvatron did not make the cut because they were replacements. Hordak technically belonged to She-Ra, but he was more of a replacement to Skeletor in my view. I'm not sure if there are any more under my rules listed above. Did I miss one? Let me know in the comments.

It took 18 days of nightly penciling and inking get this far. Unlike my heroes banner which was a complete mess to make due to wrong ratios and no planning ahead this one came laid out better. I did start with 2 pages together with one seam in the middle. But I ran out of room for characters and the ratio didn't match to make this a banner so I had to add to each side again for 3 total seams. I paid more attention to the scaling of the characters this go around (there are 2 that aren't to scale based on the cartoons though) and loosely grouped like characters together. Such as sorcerers, monsters and cybernetics.

A colored version will be coming, but I have no idea how long it will take me. If someone who is at a high level of skill wants to color this so I can see how my work looks properly colored I would love to share my linework.

Materials used:
3 generic 9x12 inch sketch pages
Alvin 0.9, 0.5 and 0.3 mm mechanical pencils
Pentel brick eraser and pencil toppers for smaller areas
Pigma Micron 01,03,05,08 markers
Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pen Hard and Soft tip (soft for feathering)
Pentel FL2L Medium Brush Pen
Gelly Roll Classic 10

Random Thoughts:
1. The physical drawing was done on 3 9x12 inch pieces of paper. The banner is 36 inches wide and 9 inches tall.
2. The digital image is 21474x5385 pixels resolution at 600 dpi and 49.1 MB in size.
3. I really need to invest in proper Strathmore paper. This is supposedly quality paper I used at about 60 lbs, but with these projects that have a lot of erasing and hand movements across the surface inking because a complete pain. The ink doesn't seep into the paper as easily due to the smoothing out of the surface. Even when using a cover paper to keep the oils from my hands off.
4. Any ideas on a cheap scanner that can scan 11x17 inch paper? Mosaic scanning doesn't work well at all since the bezels of scanners lift the paper off of the glass on the edges and distort the images. This makes stitching them together requiring a basic redraw on the edges.
5. Megatron's logo will just be added during the coloring phase. Yes, I am going to cheat instead of drawing it.
