What is MasterGIMPers?

:bulletorange:About:bulletorange:
MasterGIMPers is a resource and tutorial group aimed to help new and experienced users of GIMP to learn more about the software and snazzy things that can be done with it, and to provide resources for them to use. It is not a general Art Group.
And because this group is dedicated to providing resources and tutorials only please note:

:pointr:We're not taking art work!:pointl:

Please have a look at our affiliates like GIMP-Artists or GIMPArtistsUnite if you want to submit art.

:bulletorange:Joining:bulletorange:
Anybody can join, we'll be happy to see many dedicated GIMPers here! Requests are accepted automatically.

:bulletorange:Submissions:bulletorange:
Just go to the deviation page and hit the submit-to-group button on the right side, then select the gallery folder you want the deviation in and hit submit. That's it! ^.^
We'll then vote on the submission to be included in our gallery.

Note: We might not accept submission such as tutorials that aren't readable, lack descriptions and good pictures, are confusing, etc.!

If that's the case we'll let you know and give you a chance to fix it. This is not to be mean, but only to ensure at least a bit of quality for our members.
Have a look here and here to see how to write a good tutorial.

Sat Aug 20, 2011, 11:18 AM by el-L-eN:iconel-l-en:

So I'm back from holidays :B

And here is a link I wanted to share with you all: the GIMP handbook docs.gimp.org/en/index.html
It's really interesting to go through and maybe you'll find something you didn't know yet :eyes:

Also, I wanted to thank Jibodeah for re-doing the group rules blog and cleaning it up so awesome! :tighthug: It's now a lot easier to get the important points :P

Oh and Geosammy let us know that he corrected the file type for his Gimp Rainbow Brushes fav.me/d3f1hkn so they should work now. Just in case anybody downloaded those before the fix :meow:

ok, im surprised that draw with jazza, decided that gimp was not a good program for artists to use, i have used it for ages and i love it. everything i have made and posted to deviantart was made in gimp, and everything on my channel, was made in gimp as well. i dont think he gave it much of a chance, anyone agree?

I'm not really familiar with "draw with jazza," but I will say, while I do still really like GIMP, there are better alternatives if you JUST want to draw. I prefer Medibang as a drawing program, and use GIMP primarily for image editing, or assembling GIFs. They're similar tasks, and sometimes overlap, but there are differences!

I'd say that GIMP and other open source softwares are good, with a capital G if you're the DIY type and don't mind getting your hand dirty and finding answers on your own. I tried GIMP 5 years ago and quickly gave up because I didn't understand how layer works. Now that I've become more patient, I constantly find some hidden tricks in GIMP that I didn't know.

I totally agree, GIMP is a good program to use, especially for those who prefer to use a free program. I recently discovered and understood basic principle of layers and this helped me to do this: Quench
It is completely done with GIMP, from colours to background. Some people should give it a chance in my opinion.

Hey the majority of artwork I do with Gimp and while I'm not trying to brag, but I think I brought out the best of my artistic potential using it. :D I colored and shaded all of this using Gimp.:aww:  Bowser Yoshi huggles on the Beach by Bowser2Queen   I may have done the line art on Bowser and Yoshi in Illustrator, but I always choose to ink things with that program, even over Photoshop because I love that it uses vectors, it makes the line art very clean. But yeah, outside of that, everything else was done in Gimp. Doesn't seem so "bad" anymore does it? xD

I just wanted to let you guys know that I am running a Kickstarter (www.kickstarter.com/projects/1…) to sell prints of one of my best paintings so far that I exclusively used Gimp 2.8 to create.  Please help me by passing on the link.

I just wanted to say that I have been improving my digital game using only Gimp 2.8 and have been able to accomplish some pretty good artwork that way.  I still have a lot to learn but you can do a lot with this program.  I recently had a print maid from one of my files and it turned out great.

I need help. I tried asking help from other digital artists and I get ignored by most artists that are out there. I thought that this group can be helpful enough to get me started on what I need to do. Can anyone teach me what should I do on what art program I'm wanting to use.

There should be a Full Complete Tutorial if there is any.

I just need help Getting Started, what should I do, which tools I need to use and how many layers do I need to make a full base form and coloring and cel shading my own Dragon Ball Z character.

This may be a month late, but to get started, you need to first figure out what your picture needs to look like.  Since you want your DBZ character to look cel-shaded, then you need to first draw the outline of the character.  I'd use something like the Ink tool with either a variable width (read: pressure sensitive setting), or go with a constant width brush.  Once you've made the outline, then you need to do some coloring.

First ensure that the "inked out" layer is transparent.  Otherwise, this is going to be a pain to color.  The ink layer needs  to be transparent, for when you start coloring, you'll put your layers below this layer.  The number of layers for the picture depends upon how much detail you want in the character.  With regards to a cel-looking picture, it may take a few, since you need to put in the colors for the skin, clothing, highlights, shading, and other colors.

I hope this helps in your endeavors to use Gimp.  Happy drawing.:happybounce:
