Deviation Actions
Warlock is the sixth novel in my series of romantic, interstellar adventures.
It may well be the be the best book I've ever written, but I won't publish it until I have great cover art.
So, purely for the love of the game, I offer an open challenge to all of Deviant Art to take a whack at some cover art for this little masterpiece of mine.
This is not a contest or competition, there is no prize offered, but if by some twist of fate someone comes close enough to what I'm after I have to offer compensation to use it (I think it's a law or something) and of course, the artist will be recognized on the copyright page of every book.
(Yeah, I print old-timey paperback books.)
What I need is a sort of spooky secret agent cover, nothing pinup.
Think man of action, with a Japanese woman in a green dress.
If you can manage it, I'd like them to be overshadowed by a ghostly redhead.
If you enjoy a challenge, then have at it.

Big Red's Radiator
Damn, a radiator flush and fill is expensive, but what I didn't expect was the check engine light to come on as I rolled down the highway.
Okay, right back to the mechanic. They checked the codes (computers, great) and told me it was nothing serious. The mechanic cleared the alert but if it comes on again, I should let them know. I'm thinking the mechanic bumped or jostled something during the maintenance procedure, and set off what was basically a false alarm. Fair enough, Big Red's 21 years old, so that sort of thing comes as no surprise.
This is the value of having good mechanics to look after my big beautiful land boat.
Frosty's 18th Tour
The building maintenance guy put Frosty in the window for me on June 7, 2024. A few hours later I belly-bumped it out the second floor window. My next door neighbor helped me get it back upstairs and into the window again where it remained...until today.
October 7, 2024, I got a good enough grip to lift Frosty up, bring it into the living room, onto my cart without incident. That's right, all by myself...YES!
I have an appointment in a few days, I am so totally telling the doctor what the medication change he made back in July has done. Turns out too little, too late is better than nothing, but it did give me the strength to pull a 5,000 BTU air conditioner out of a window, like that scene from the opening credits of Kung-Fu.
YES!
Better than nothing
The doctor scheduled this lab work two months ago. Neither of us foresaw rain nor a dead battery, but I told the doctor I'd get this done on the specified day, so to the bus stop I went.
Once the tech drew the samples, I did something I would not have considered possible just six months ago. It's only about a quarter mile, but I walked over to Walmart to pick up some oatmeal raisin cookies. I wandered around the store for about an hour until the bus came back.
For a little perspective, before the current course of treatment I had trouble walking down the hall to hang with Derby.
I guess too little too late is better than nothing at all.
The Monsters I Fight
Other social media platforms think they're doing a good thing by removing content regarding suicide and self harm. I hope Deviant Art doesn't jump on that bandwagon, because it would be a mistake with tragic consequences.
The stories I've been posting of late are all from The Viking Protocol, a book I wrote about eight years ago. Like any good story, they're meant to teach as much as entertain. It may be hard to look at, but if someone you care about is fighting monsters only he or she can see, you might want any sort of way into that fight.
I know what it's like to surrounded by monsters like desperation, anger, despair and loneliness, but they can only kill because their allies are indifference, apathy and ignorance.
