I first became interested in glasses when I developed presbyopia; but I only began to approach them from a photographic perspective by chance, after reading Barthes: in Camera Lucida, the punctum is that detail which wounds, stings, and captures the viewer beyond the general meaning of the image. I then found a rich source of reflection in the work of Greg Gorman. And so I began to reflect on the matter.
Glasses do not simply cover the gaze: they transform it into a surface. They frame the face, protect it, expose it, make it more legible and, at the same time, more distant. When they become the true subject of the image, the portrait changes in nature: it no longer seeks merely the person, but the subtle boundary between the one who looks, the one who is looked at, and what is reflected in between. Here, the portrait tends to become an inhabited still life: the face remains alive, but the hierarchy of the image shifts to the object. In candid or street photography

Tripping on Sunshine
Tripping on sunshine,
picking up daisies.
People say I’m unwell,
but they’re all crazy.
Lost in the haze,
no need to explain.
Every street, every face
has gone fucking insane.
Living my best life,
soft‑hearted, lazy.
Can’t carry the weight
of these diaries daily.
It’s getting too crowded
when I’m all alone.
The voices keep shouting
about some distant home.
Look to the sky,
float off on a breeze.
Flying is simple
when logic ceases to be.
Lonely people
Spinning backwards
Going nowhere
Always searching
Never knowing
Anyone
Somewhere, something
tries to explain
these endless debacles
that haunt every age.
It means nothing to me
I’m a speck of dust
that fell from the sky
like the rest of us.
So beautiful here,
I wish I could stay.
But the world pulls me back
so, I can die again today.
Nothing seems right
maybe everything’s wrong.
I swim back to my lily pond,
where I’ve always belonged.
Reptilian beings
comfort me;
I lick their faces
and eat their fleas.
