Nikon D800 with Tokina 17-35
Bismarck, ND

Trying some light painting
A light layer of clouds rolled in and kinda ruined my startrails. I tried to salvage the night with something decent

It was definitely below freezing, My new RRS tripod had frost on all the legs!!

is that line of three stars near the middle third of the edge Orion's Belt?
how long was the exposure on this one?
MarshallLipp's avatar
It sure is...30 seconds or the stars would start to trail. Iso 2000

*grin* thought so. have you tried doing Infrared photography yet?
MarshallLipp's avatar
No, I dont think my D800 will capture Infrared light that well. Doesnt one need a converted camera?
ScottMan2th's avatar
i think that's usually the case. you might be able to use a dedicated filter [link] that will do the job well enough (if i read the article correctly). A camera specifically calibrated for IR would in theory render better and more accurate results, but i personally do not have that rather expensive option to add to my kit. Would still like to try this someday, since i love the surreal effects it produces.

Views like these make me so jealous! Being in a place with a significant amount of light polution, I've never seen the stars as beautiful as these in the night sky.
