"A delicate eye for details is important for tinkering with cutting-edge technology. Just like a seamstress must watch for errand threads that, when pulled, would make a dress fall apart, an engineer must watch for flaws in hardware and software that might cause malfunction, and turn what should be safe, useful tools and machines into dangerous contraptions that cause more harm than good."

--- Rarity Belle, a unicorn engineer and inventor in the Equestrian Commonwealth, famous for developing revolutionary advances in the field of cybernetics, with her creations notable for their extreme reliability, efficiency and safety.

"Whatever it takes--we're hiring her."

--- Many Terran Cybernetics Company Executives, when Rarity's reputation spread beyond the Equestrian Commonwealth. Her talents would soon become highly sought-after by various corporations and governments throughout known space.

Awesome! I like to think that Rarity could do this with the same precision she uses to make dresses; it's a different application of the same special talent. Maybe she'd still need gems to contain energy or something...

So, are we witnessing the birth of Sweetie Bot?

One has to wonder how designing a robot and screwing it together includes a picture of a DNA strand on her projected cheat sheet =p

If Rarity were to shift to designing technology, she would use it to help the entire world of Equestria.

This is nice. Although in my AU headcannon, where cars are a form of transportation, she'd be a car designer for luxury coachbuilding company like Duesenburg or Packard where there's a bit more art than science.

Hey look buddy.  I'm an engineer.  That means I solve problems.  Not problems like "what is beauty", because that would fall under the purview of things that are not a problem, but are built into my every creation.  I solve PRACTICAL problems.

Like, how do I stop some big mean motherhoofer from tearing me a structurally superfluous new plot?

Answer...use a gun.  And if that don't work, use more gun.

Like this, gem encrusted magic bolting little number designed by me...built by me...and you'd best hope not pointed at you.
Zalleus Featured By Owner Nov 4, 2014
I'm not a fan of Rarity. And yet... I like this. I'm okay with this.
ghostfacekiller39 Featured By Owner Nov 5, 2014

There is a comment like this on just about every piece of Rarity fanart. I can't just wrap my head around it - if you're not a fan, then why are you looking at fanart of her? Roll Eyes Even bigger question is, why are you going out of your way to point out that you're not a fan on the fanart comment section?

I always find this pretty much obligitory comment confusing. It's much easier to just say "Nice Work!" or something Lonely
Zalleus Featured By Owner Nov 5, 2014
I'm looking at it because I scroll through the Drawfriends on Equestria daily. Sometimes I find gems to admire and occasionally download. As an engineering major and general fan of science forever, I take interest in pictures with a techy aesthetic. Hence, my viewing of the piece.

I think due to my love of science and engineering, I tend to not like characters who value form over function, and Rarity's frivolous nature and obsession over appearance makes me not like her as much as I like the others. I believe that most other bronies who dislike Rarity also share the same, or at least similar, opinions.

And yet, this picture captured my interest, despite featuring the pony I like the least. The high-tech environment, the robots, tools, and holograms appeal to my personal aesthetic preference, and it portrays Rarity engaging in, and being proficient in, engineering and construction of machines, a trade I myself would like to learn. It reminds me of something I forget about too often in her; that despite her aristocratic airs she is a talented craftsman, someone who makes things. She earns a profit by applying her skills in a trade that benefits her society, and takes enjoyment from not only the finished product, but also the production itself. She makes robots (clothes) not merely because she likes money, but because she likes to make robots (clothes).

While it might be easier to just say "Nice work!", I wanted to tell the artist that s/he made me think about a character in a way I usually don't. While I do have negative opinions about Rarity, this artist made me like her anyway.
ghostfacekiller39 Featured By Owner Nov 6, 2014
You really shouldn't write her off as just a "form over function" girly girl like you do. She's displayed a powerful will and an ability to take care of herself on her own, a kind and caring nature for everyone from her friends to total strangers, as well as unprecedented ambition and passion. If you're going to be as shallow as to write her off for her interests lying in fashion and beauty, I dare say you're no better than what you claim her to be. I don't dislike you for your interests in mechanics and engineering because I like to think I'm better than those folks who make fun of people for liking MLP or D&D or whatever, but I digress. I do think you should learn a bit of a friendship lesson yourself in terms of accepting that just because someone likes something you don't doesn't make them bad, but I won't waste my time further preaching to someone who wouldn't care to listen because they're too mired in their own ways to accept that they might not be right, as is the case with virtually everyone who I've met that shared a negative opinion of Rarity.

While I can accept your reasoning behind pointing out why you felt the need to point that out, I gotta urge you to pull the veil you yourself have put up in regards to her character based on your stereotyping of her and give her another chance. She's a wonderful character once you give her the time of day, but it appears you don't want to do that. I hope you do reconsider, though, because you're missing out on a lot. Open up your mind, man.
Zalleus Featured By Owner Nov 7, 2014
Woah, baby! Struck a nerve?

I'm not saying she isn't intelligent, I'm not saying she isn't tenacious, I'm not saying she never earned her Element of Generosity, I understand all those things about her are true. I'd never say she is a bad character; just that, of each of the ponies and their sets of flaws, I dislike Rarity's the most. I can tell you're a Rarity fan (judging by your reaction to my dislike of her, your pic, and your little intro on your profile page), and I can respect that.

But I'm not. I haven't been for a good 4 seasons. It's not because I have a veil over my head, that's just my assessment of her.
ghostfacekiller39 Featured By Owner Nov 7, 2014
I can't help but deem it as a veil over your head that you yourself have placed, judging by your lack of desire to perform a reassessment. I can appreciate flaws, though - I feel character flaws are what separate G4 from G3 and whatnot. What makes G4 special, in other words.

You clearly have no desire to venture outside of your narrow line of thinking, however, thus I shall waste no more of my time dealing with your fear of new perspectives. Goodbye.
Zalleus Featured By Owner Nov 8, 2014
It's just my opinion of her dude, I don't need to reassess anything. Thanks for being the better man here, but just remember that just because someone doesn't agree with you, doesn't mean they're closed-minded.
PonsonbyBritt Featured By Owner Nov 8, 2014
And remember that it's REALLY IRRITATING for an artist to hear "I normally hate this, it's awful, but I like it when YOU do it" about the same subject over and over again. And the arrogance you're displaying isn't real flattering either. They're not the only one here with something to learn about tact -- you're gonna be a gelding-in-waiting if you keep talking to artists like that. :>
