Mark Varley
Artist | Professional | Photography
United Kingdom
Professional Photographer and Rope Bondage Artist.

I first picked up a camera when I was around 15 years old, I loved art but I was terrible at everything I tried, until my school art teacher gave me some B&W film, at last I had found something where my talent and ability matched my enthusiasm.

Photography was a hobby for many years, Wildlife & Landscapes mostly, but I had always greatly admired Artstic Nudes. When some friends encouraged me to finally try shooting some myself the results were beautiful, I sold my first artistic nude print just a few days after taking it, I was hooked.

I decided to make photography my job when I was (medically) forced into a career change, I started studying computing but quit for photography instead, following my heart you could say. I now specialise in and exclusively shoot in the genres of Artistic Nude, Fine-Art Nude, Figure Nude, Erotica & Bondage.

Despite loving working in other genres, I am by far more widely known for my bondage work, whihc is a very significant skillset in itself.
I started tying girls up at just 15 years old, but I started taking it seriously after unexpectedly purchasing a Japanese magazine full of rope bondage, I was captivated by the beauty of it. I was just 18 at the time and by the time I was 30 I was very capable with significant talent in that area also, I was regularly teaching others how to tie and I started including bondage in my photography.

I published my first book in 2006 which was a mixture of bondage photography and a how-to guide, followed in 2007 by London Bound, another bondage book. I now work regularly on projects based on a theme or idea and publish them as books, prints are also available, my books on Bondage are usually artistic studies which are both beautiful to look at and an inspirational source of ideas for people who tie themselves, my non-bondage books are similarly presented as beautiful bodies of work, the kind of books you can sit down for a couple of hours and slowly flick though, like walking through a gallery or exhibition, whenever you like.

I'm a professional artist today with my work fairly evenly split between Photography (within the above genres) and Rope Bondage.
My Photography is split between shooting my own projects usually published as books, and shooting commissions, often where the client is also the model, usually someone who wants to capture some beautiful photos of their body before age starts making significant changes.
My Bondage work is split between teaching others (both photographers and individuals and couples for private purposes), rigging rope bondage for other photographers and videographers shoots, and I also retail ropes and associated hardware and I make instrictional videos.

I love both Photography and Rope Bondage for similar reasons, both require both artistic/creative talent and ability combined with a significant of technical knowledge and skills, in both cases it's necessary to completely understand and master the technical aspects to the point that it's no longer necessary to think about them, before the artistic/creative side is able to flow unhindered and freely, only then can the best work be created. I consider myself very fortunate to have reached a sufficient level of technical knowledge and ability in both disciplines while also having significant artistic talent and ability in both also. While it has taken over 25 years of constant development, work, practice, etc. to get to where I am now, I wouldn't be doing this without also being lucky enough to have significant natural talent. Hard work will get you a long way but talent is largely down to luck.
I have at least another 25 years of practice & learing ahead of me, if I'm lucky. Art is not a destination, it's a lifelong journey.

By way of a disclaimer, all of the people depicted in my photography are models, professional or amateur, and photos were taken during shoots, not 'recreational activity', they were all over 18 at the time the photos were taken and had fully consented to being restrained where depicted. Some of my bondage imagery may be risky or dangerous to attempt to recreate, I am an extremely experienced rope bondage professional who is properly able to assess, manage and mitigate risks associated with physical restraint and the application of loads to ties on the body.

If you are in the UK and you are interested in learning rope bondage, or experiencing it, or in hiring me to tie a model for your shoot, feel free to get in-touch. I am comfortable tying male or female models and for any genre from art to porn to catwalk.
If you're not in the UK you can still learn from me by watching my videos, the easiest place to see them all is my website www.BeautifulBondage.net/Video
I also sell ropes and associated hardware and ship worldwide, also through my website www.BeautifulBondage.net

Cleopatra Chest Weave
Model is Pinkerbell :iconpinkerbell2:
Bondage & Photography by Me
You can see my instructional video for this tie at www.BeautifulBondage.net/Video
Direct Link - www.beautifulbondage.net/store…

I initially designed this tie in 2013 to compliment a similar crotchrope tie I designed in 2009.
Relatively recently I started seeing it referred to as a 'Cleopatra' (tie, necklace, weave, etc.).
I didn't give it this name and it's unclear if it was named by someone who copied it from one of my photos or instructional videos, or by someone who coincidentally invented it in isolation to my work, it doesn't actually matter which is the case as I like the name so I've adopted it.

My Neon Bondage project was started back in 2013, I realised that electroluminescent wire, which I was familiar with from using it in my computer for lighting (more often used in modified cars) could be used in place of rope for bondage, partly inspired by some designs I saw in neon signmaking, which is why I named the project Neon Bondage (obviously it's not possible to use actual neon tubes, as those are glass tubes filled with neon gas, the obvious alternative as it gives a consistent light is EL wire, LED wire, sometimes called 'neon wire' is just a number of LED's which give both directional and inconsistent light).

For those who don't know, EL wire (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrol…) uses a copper wire core coated with phosphor with a second fine wire wrapped around that, with a couple of flexible plastic layers over that. It runs on either a battery pack or mains power supply via a transformer that creates a high voltage (90-120v) 1KHz AC (very low current) which makes the phosphor glow.
It proved very tricky to work with as the wire we used was about 5mm thick and was both relatively inflexible and fragile compared to ropes (too much flexing or too tight a turn and the wire can break or the phosphor break off), add to that the rigid nature and plastic clothes-line feel it was challenging.
From my perspective it was reluctant to stay where I wanted it and hard to tie knots into, the decorative knots you see in the photos is about as tight as it could be safely tied. To finish the ties I used small translucent cable ties, on advice from my sponsor EL Wirecraft www.elwirecraft.co.uk.
From my models perspective, Pinkerbell it was very physically challenging, decorative ties already often take quite some time but working with EL Wire poses had to be held for far longer, up to three hours! she also found she wasn't able to relax into a tie like you would with rope.

It certainly proved challenging to work with, in the end, we required 16 shoots to complete the project, and I personally feel the resulting photographs are beautiful. What you see is exactly as it was photographed, theres no 'photoshopping' or similar trickery. The photos I like the most are as usual the more elaborate and decorative ones, but some of the very simple ideas also make for very striking photos.

The book is currently available for pre-order via my website www.beautifulbondage.net/store…, I'm currently going through the process of making small adjustments after receiving the first proof-copy, as soon as it's perfect it'll be available to ship. The sample photos both I and Pinkerbelle are uploading are all taken from the book which has 100 photos (most of which you'll need to buy the book to see!).

For those interested in technical information:
Our EL wire came from ELWirecraft www.elwirecraft.co.uk and we were working with 5mm wire in four colours, Blue and Red we had in 2x 10m lengths, Green and Pink we had in 4x 5m lengths, total 10m per colour, 40m total. In addition to the wire itself you'd need the transformer boxes, we found one was enough for as much wire as we ever used at once, and we used the 8xAA battery power supply, though mains transformers are also available. A huge bag of 100mm translucent cable ties was also required! and wire cutters both for removing cable ties and in case of an emergency requiring the wire to be cut (easier than EMT shears in this case).
My Camera is a Nikon dF www.europe-nikon.com/en_GB/pro… and most of the time I was using a Nikon 50mm f1.8 www.europe-nikon.com/en_GB/pro… lens, some earlier photos were taken with a  Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 www.imaging-resource.com/lense… lens. Photography was done in a blackout studio and at ISO400 mostly to keep the shutter speed up for handheld shooting, a single room light through a doorway was the main directional ambient light source.

My model for this project was Pinkerbell :iconpinkerbell2:

FAQ:
It's Electroluminescent Wire (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrol…) (from ELwirecraft www.elwirecraft.co.uk). Not LED, Not UV.
It's not 'photoshopped', it's pretty much exactly as captured in-camera.
Yes it's safe, no it's not comfortable, yes it's hard to work with.
The ties are all 'real', the EL wire is the 'rope'.
The book is currently available for pre-order and will start shipping late January 2018 (as soon as I'm happy with how the photos look). Pre-order through my website now - www.BeautifulBondage.net/neon - when fully available it'll also be on Amazon, through my site you can order signed copies and I ship worldwide.

Thank you Josh, You have some impressive photos in your gallery, my preferred genre is Artistic Nude and Fine-Art Nude and your body is fantastic for that, great definition and very well proportioned, perfect for the genre, I hope you are as in demand as you ought to be, if you were in the UK I'd definitely want to work with you.
