Description
"Some say her father was a Mirumoto. Others know that her mother was a Matsu. Nothing else matters."
Matsu Kita is an elite samurai of the Lion Clan. She is one of the fiercest warriors that the Matsu Clan ever has. A kensai master and an expert in fighting with spear.
As a noble warrior, she reflects the high level of discipline of a Lion samurai. Her ferocity in battle makes her a very admirable character in war. She withstands every challenge thrown at her, and she will never back down no matter how dreadful the ordeal will be. This is also why she without hesitate would single handedly battle an entire troop of armies for the sake of her clan.
TRIVIA
The Matsu Clan are fierce warriors, perhaps the most aggressive of any family in Rokugan. They strike quickly, decisively, and without questions. If there is a single samurai to fear in Rokugan it is a Matsu. They sometimes wear straw ‘manes’ to emulate real Lions look and small amounts of war paint on their faces and arms to inspire fears to their enemies. Their mempo and armor is designed with a Lion motif, the proud symbol of the clan.

The moment one lays eyes on this piece; their immediate impression is undoubtedly shock and awe. *raynkazuya has been known to deliver exceptionally high quality work, but none of his other illustrations are quite like this.
As is typical of his style a single character is the primary focus of the piece, and the incredible detail and effort that this image was imbued with is quite evident. Look at her facial expression. Even beneath the war paint, gore and masterfully crafted lion helmet, aggression emanates from her every pore.
In studying *raynkazuya's work, it is obvious how carefully he pays attention to setting and the background he is placing the character in. Every one of his works shows a world which is distorted by the emotions and perspective of the character in focus. This piece is no exception, but never before has he submitted an illustration in a setting of such chaos.
The battlefield depicted is surely horrific, but the artist spares it little space. The soldiers surrounding her are removed in both size and color from the action of this image, Matsu Kita. She completely dominates the foreground, and the ferocity of her attacks obscures nearly the entire battlefield. If we assume that this is drawn from her perspective, then it seems her only direct link to the world around her is the blow she is striking and the spray of blood it causes.
If there is any flaw with this piece, it would be that the Matsu Kita drawn here too perfectly embodies the spirit of the ferocious lions of her clan. Her aggression is almost too intense to handle, but nonetheless *raynkazuya has certainly succeeded with this masterpiece.
