Description
The sun was slowly leaning toward the horizon, painting the sky in crimson and golden tones. The pirates, preparing for their nightly feast, had gathered around the fire at the far end of the beach. Mugs of rum, hoarse voices, the clinking of coins — all of it quieted in the light of sunset.
Marina was left alone, tied to the palm tree, her mouth still covered with the white cloth. Boredom slowly spread through her body like warm but sticky resin. She began to study the island in the distance — it seemed endless: forests, mountains, waterfalls hidden behind cliffs. Its vastness was both frightening and mesmerizing. Perhaps this island was the only reason Marina hadn’t yet fallen into despair.
She rubbed the knots on her wrists — more out of boredom than in any real hope of freeing herself. Every movement of her hands, every attempt to shift the ropes gave her a sense of at least some activity, a small illusion of control over the situation.
Her mind was restless with thoughts: was there anyone else on this island? Or was she completely alone? Her mouth was gagged, there was no one to call to, and the sound of her own voice wouldn’t have broken through the noise of the surf and the rustling of the leaves.
She shifted her gaze to the pirates by the fire. They were laughing, having fun, tossing pieces of gold and meat into the flames, and as Marina watched them, she felt a strange calmness. Closing her eyes slightly, she allowed herself to dissolve into the sunset, into the scent of salt and smoke, into the soft whisper of the wind among the palms.
Loneliness no longer felt so painful. It became a time to observe, to reflect, and simply... to be.
