+ Itsukushima +

Of my 9 month trip to Japan, my two favorite days were the day we all dressed up in kimonos and the day we all went to the island of Itsukushima, off the coast of Hiroshima. This is the famous torii of the Itsukushima shrine. The shrine itself stands in the water, like the torii, like a dock, and like Venice.

The most beautiful view of this shrine is when the first rays of sunrise hit the bright red torii from over the water -- a sight that, unfortunately, no gargoyle will ever see.

~~~
The torii and the water is a photo I took while at Itsukushima. The rest was painted by hand in the last 6 hours or so.
Photoshop.
Absolutely beautiful composition and character portrayal! I adore the border and the soft coloring of the Gargoyle. Overall fantastic ;)
Nicely done, I love the mixing you did. one thing though, the leaf brush, I think it would be better in the future to make a custom brush. Normally it doesn't matterbut the maple leaf brush is a really regignizable photoshop default. if you need any asian style brushes I have plenty.
I love this peice though this has got to be one of the best photoshop Ukiyo-e's i'v seen. I am actually in the process of making a Ukiyo-e of me and jess.
so what if it's a default? itsukushima is knowns for its shrine, deer and maples. :) i picked that brush on purpose.
thank you.
i know, it was just a suggestion
maria-jaujou's avatar
no, you're right. i should have edited the brush to be a seven-pointed maple, like they have in japan (japanese maple leaves look like pot O.o) ^_^
ryo-naguchi's avatar
yes they do, i think thats why hippies used asian hand signs and dressed an naru's during the 60's and 70's. i couldnt help but notice the brush. It looks really good even with the default and anyone thats not in the industy probly wouldn't have noticed it was a default.
really? i didnt know that.. i just got to itsukushima and saw all these pot leaves etched into the sandstone in the plaza outside the.. boat-station... um, dock? depot? whatever. and believe me, i was innocent enough to think "huh, these maple leaves look weird..." and not "wow, pot." haha
it's also super-tiny, so i'm doubly surprised that you noticed. industry? what industry?
really? :XD:
I love kimono day too x3
if onyl I HAD a kimono T^T it would be better
maria-jaujou's avatar
i didnt have a kimono... but our entire japan program group rented kimonos on that day. and we had japanese ladies come in and help us put them on correctly, 'n stuff. ^^ super fun. except the shoes are super-unfomfy because they're made to be 2 sizes smaller than your feet.. by default... cause "that's pretty". ^^ but otherwise, it rocked socks ^^
Nephro's avatar
hahahahaha :XD: yes, that is quite comfortable.
and the fact that you have to walk in tiny steps or (because of the shape of the shoes) you fall face forward :XD:
maria-jaujou's avatar
my personal theory is that it is -because- of these tiny painful shoes that japanese women walk pigeon-toed. :XD:
Nephro's avatar
hahaha xD
well partially, yes it is. :XD: darn shoes! and all for fashion! *sigh*
Oh, how lovely ^^ I could see this being a long poster. I love that you're inspired so much by your time in Japan, too... it would be neat to go there for myself, someday, but I really like seeing it through the eyes of people who know how to appreciate it!
