Canvas Hakama by Marcusstratus Canvas Hakama by Marcusstratus
These are the first pair of Hakama I've made. I did these when I was staying with the Lastwear crew up in Seattle. They've got cargo pockets, loops for keys, et cetera.

One of this moments when you see that "your" Ideas are already produced by somebody else :D
But i have really to say that i'm really impressed by your creations. I wish i would have the sewing patterns to change them into my size and produce them for me.
By the way, do you have an profession (tailor,Garment Engineer)? Looks very good crafted!

Hello! Sorry for the late response. If you google "Lastwear hakama pattern" you'll see several results of what the pattern looks like and the steps of construction. There used to be all the documents in one place online, but now you have to hunt for them.

Hi!
I saw these recently, and REALLY loved the idea and the execution (both in the pattern's design and your skill at making it). However, when I followed your advice below, I was saddened to discover that Lastwear has jumped ship, took all their patterns down, and gone home. This was VERY disappointing! I was able to find part of the pattern and instructions, but not all of them.

Would you be willing to share them with me? Supposedly they are still open-source licensed...

Hello! There is an old Brass-Goggles forum post I always point people to who are looking to reproduce these hakama.

brassgoggles.co.uk/forum/index…

You'll notice the first couple pages are missing I'm in ur post! Shakin mah fish!  but the gist of it is is just hemming the front and back 1st, then sewing the pleats. Then you go onto attaching the pockets to the front (+bamboo folds) and sewing the bamboo folds on the back, joining front and backs together along the center front/back (CF/CB). Then the waist bands (WB) are put on. You have instructions for the front WB but the back WB is put on just the same, with the interior layer sewn on first, the stiffener inserted and the exterior layer topstitched down. then the back belt loop is attached and all the topstitching is done. If you're going to use those narrow ties in back, like illustrated on the front WB construction, then they're inserted when you do the first round of top stitching, after sewing the back WB onto the back waistline.

Something else that's omitted is a fly opening. That was just a couple rectangles to make a facing for the opening and then a flap to cover both. What I like to do is something more like a jeans zipper fly, or button fly as it's cleaner. Also, when the front and back are sewn together at the side seam (one of the last steps) They're reinforced at the bottom of the pocket with a rectangle or patch that's been sewn on to conceal the raw edge at the top.

that is a lot of fabric but it is worth it, hakama's are very comfertable. i just need to decide upon what fabric to make my next one, i want one that is comfertable yet durable, i might go denim maby

denim is the best choice for durability, but the more durable the fabric the stiffer it is.

yes, and i want something that is comfertable. plus one problem i have had with some denim is that it shrinks when i wash it

Marcusstratus Featured By Owner Oct 29, 2010  Professional Artisan Crafter
So to solve that, prewash your fabric before you cut and sew your garments. Then it will only shrink a tiny amount after it's been made. pretty much all fabrics shrink when washed, except for synthetics

yeah i will do that, thanks for the hint, i also plan to make some straps to tie it around the ankles and up to the hips, that way i dont have to pick it up like a dress if i walk up stairs

Thanks! You can totally find clothing like this, especially in Seattle :D The company *Lastwear has a physical store in Seattle and they're getting their online one set up. You can look at their journals, they've got information about it there. You can also look up their website at [link]
