Dragons and wyverns don't exist so how they look is anybody's guess.  Heck, dragons used to be depicted simply as a serpent, which is what the word Dragon(Latin:Draco) means.

o.o Actually, there was a scientific document on the discovery of frozen Dragons.

But I'm very picky and will fight for the significant difference between Dragons and Wyverns! That's what I believe in.

If you mean "Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real" that thing was just a prop.  The body, the stained glass windows, the organs, the experiments, they were all fake.  They even said so in the film and in the making of the film.  They said it was hypothetical, not fact.  If that's not what you mean then can you link me the documents?  I'd like to see them.

Either way, in the case of this picture, a dragon such as that does not and never will exist.  So nobody knows for sure what it looks like.  That's the best thing about dragons.  Taking away the fantasy means taking away the fun.

Although, if you wish to "fight" for the significance of the mythological, non-existent dragon, then I'm willing to calmly debate.

To start things off, if we really want to talk about the significance of a dragon and how it "should" look then we'd have to look back on the history of their mythology.  The idea of dragons having four legs and two wings is a fairly recent, fairly western concept that has taken root only in the last fifty years or so.  One of the first famous depictions of four legged, winged reptiles was created in the 15th century painting of the story of "Vortigern and the Red and White Dragons", which is partially the inspiration for the Welsh flag several centuries later.  However, for an extremely long time, dating back to 3rd Century BC, dragons were depicted as serpents.  On rare occasions they were depicted with legs(usually two) and/or wings but most often times they stuck to their roots and had the common serpentine body because the word "dragon" in the Latin word Draco or Draka, means "snake" or "serpent".  It's name in Old English, Wyrm, means snake.  It's name in Finnish, Lohikaarme, means "salmon-snake" or tulikäärme which means "fire-snake".  As for the Eastern dragons, (the ones famous in China and Japan) they have changed very little.  They still retain their serpentine forms and while they tend to have legs, very rarely do you see them with wings and the ones that do have wings are very recent artworks.  One of the most recent being in the animated series "Avatar: The Last Airbender".

It wasn't until around the 14th century that the popularity of "wyverns" became more apparent as a mythological reptile of evil.  The word wyvern means "viper" or "adder".  Both words are, again, hinting towards a snake.  The wyvern-like body of two legs and two wings, sometimes depicted as half serpent, half bat/bird, began to fill the paintings of European art.  Even still, most stories described them as being flightless despite having wings.  The four-legged, two-winged lizard showed up in artwork here and there but it was never truly popular until around 1970 or so.  J.R.R. Tolkien's book "The Hobbit" was one of the biggest inspirations to the idea of the four-legged dragon.  In 1977 the release of the Dungeons and Dragons table-top game, inspired in part by J.R.R.'s book, also made the four legged dragon's popularity rise.  However, even now the idea of two winged dragons hasn't faded away.  Movies like "Dragonslayer"(1981), "Reign of Fire"(2002), "Beowulf"(2007) and "How to Train Your Dragon(1&2)"(2010 and 2014) all have dragons depicted with two legs and two wings.  In 1984 the "NeverEnding Story" depicted a serpentine dragon with four legs and no wings.  The 2008 film "Fire and Ice: The Dragon Chronicles" the dragons looked more like stingrays, having no legs with flat wings.  In 2011 Bethesda's popular Elder Scrolls game, "Skyrim" depicted the dragons as two legged.  Do I need to get started on "Game of Thrones"?  The only difference between a dragon and a wyvern in most peoples' eyes is that a dragon breathes fire while a wyvern cannot but a wyvern is venomous.  Not that it matters, neither one exists so how do we know?

The idea of a dragon having two legs and two wings hasn't died and it's unlikely it ever will.  Heck, I know that there are people who prefer their dragons having two legs and two wings.  The fact still remains that dragons and wyverns do not exist.  They are pure myth.  Fantasy.  If someone draws a serpent and says it's a dragon then they're right.  If someone draws a reptilian beast with two legs and two wings and then calls it a dragon, then they're right.  Same with the modern four legs and two wings.  I've seen western dragons drawn with four wings, two wings, six wings and even no wings.  There are dragons with feathers, fur, whiskers and butterfly wings.  There are some with dog-like heads, raptor-like heads, cat-like heads, and so on.  There are ones with short necks, long necks, straight legs, sprawled legs, frills, fins, hooves, claws, hands, talons and more.  Some of the more modern dragons of this decade have taken on a greyhound-like physique or have long faces that have a larger lower jaw.  Some are brightly colored and sparkle like gems while some are dull and dark.  Some are depicted as evil while others are depicted as wise and intelligent.  It's all made up.

Should we go back to the roots of the dragon?  Should we say "well, dragon means serpent so only serpents can be called dragons."?  Should we turn our backs on all of this creativity and thought that's being put into this awesome animal?  I don't know about you but I say no way.   Dragons are not creatures that are tied down by reality.  They are the very symbols of freedom in my eyes.  That's why dragons are my favorite animal.

Now for my question.  Indulge me, I'm asking sincerely.  Why is it so important to you that a dragon absolutely must look a certain way in order to be a dragon?  Especially since dragons don't exist.  I would think that anyone that loves dragons wouldn't want to be tied down by non-existent rules.  Why chain yourself?  Why limit the dragon?  Why not keep your mind open to the possibilities?  Why stick to only one flavor?  I'm not saying you're not entitled to your tastes.  If your favorite dragon is the one with four leg and two wings then that's perfectly fine.  Four legs and two wings are my preferred dragon too.  However, if someone wants their dragon with two legs and two wings then why can't it be a dragon in your mind?  Their guess is as good as yours...or mine.  There is absolutely nothing stopping them from saying it's a dragon.  Nothing at all.  Nor is there anything wrong with it.  If the person who so tirelessly created this piece of artwork calls it a dragon, then it's a dragon.

Yes, the documentary you are likely thinking of was a "mockumentary". That is the one about finding frozen remains in Romania. Unfortunately, though I too would have loved for dragons to have been real creatures, they are not. There are some dinosaurs whose skeletons and remains have lead us to believe they may have looked very dragon like so we'll have to take what those magnificent creatures left behind for us to get as close to dragons as possible.

Are you talking about that 'Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real'? That entire thing was fake. They even said it was on the documentary. They stated that it was a depiction of what it would be like if they found a dragon's frozen remains.

Dragons didn't exist. I wish they had/did, but sadly, for now, that is but fantasy.
