Matte Sketch - airship

Big news: I'm now working as a matte painter! So far it's been pretty fun. It's a two-part process for me. I like to do a painterly sketch (basically an elaborate block in) first, without using photos, just to test out composition and structural ideas. Then it's time to bring in the photo reference and mesh it with the painting. This painting is 50% matte, 50% sketch.

And for you comic saavy people, you'll no doubt see the large influence here from one of my favourite graphic novels, Keepers of the Maser.
