I'm entering the LotD bumper competition for the third year in a row. I've been sitting on this material for over a year and a half, but I've had so much stuff going on that I never got to finish the project properly. Instead I'm using it for the bumper competition, with some added animated tentacles made from modelling clay.
I've made a short video compiling some test footage of my puppets from the past few years. There are both attempts at stopmotion and regular puppetteering, mainly marionette-techniques. The biggest challenges besides time tend to be that I'm not really able to properly light my greenscreen set-up, which mostly is just wherever I happen to have enough space to throw green cloth over it. The poor lighting means that there will be loads of shadows and other errors, as can be seen in the video, but I think I've managed to become better at masking the flaws.
The past year-and-a-half have been hectic, to say the least. My studies are finally nearing their end and I'm right now in the process of moving to a new home in Vaasa, where I will begin work in the Autumn. Besides the occasional vlog I've made about folk beliefs as well as experimenting with different simple special effects, I haven't been able to make any bigger projects in way over a year. My time has mainly been spent balancing studies, work and family life, while my most frequent partner in crime moved to a different town, so all our colaborations have been done over a long distance. In short, our Youtube-channel Guerilla Pictures has been pretty much abandoned. Fairly soon there will be yet another new reason to postpone video-projects, as my wife will give birth in late October, but I'd like to be able to finish one or two short projects before the little one arrives. Hopefully my friends and I will manage to fix something, and in preparation for that I made this short stopmotion animation:
This is a very short clip I made to experiment further with green-screen and some of the free effects on Footagecrate.com, as well as a bit of rudimentary stopmotion. I might use this clip for a larger project in the future, definitely something involving trolls. I have made a few vlogs (in Swedish) about ancient folkore present in recent history and somebody asked me to make a video about trolls, which is a pretty big subject that I'll gladly discuss.
I've had a long relationship with the Student Theatre at Åbo Akademi University (STÅ), having worked with props and scenery back when I were an active member. I even acted on stage for one play way back in 2008. Nowadays I've mainly borrowed their facilities and worked with their members for my own videos. They will soon put up a play called Törnrosa Exposed! ("Sleeping Beauty Exposed"), which is a satire based on the wellknown fairytale and its Disney adaptation. Here Sleeping Beauty is portrayed as a socialite who pretty much just wants to party all the time and ends up in a love triangle when she falls for a prince, who happens to be married to the equivalent of Maleficent. Here is the trailer I've made for the play, in the style of old news bulletins. There are subtitles in English for those of you who aren't fluent in Swedish.
I'm a geek of many interests, including drawing and miniatures. I hesitate to use the word "art" because of how easily it can equate to something being very pretentious, or in the worst case an attempt at immunity against criticism. No, I don't call my stuff art, because I just doodle for the fun of it. I have a very cartoony style and I prefer to use exaggeration and simple designs to invoke what I could never make with a realistic style. I applaud those who can, but I'm quite comfortable with being a cartoonist. I work with different pencils and after scanning my drawings I use a program called Photosuite to colourize them.
