Gabrielle Gilson (AI Art)

Of all the characters in my novel, Gabrielle Gilson may have the most complex backstory.  She was born in Sydney Segment, Australia, in the late 29th century.  Her family belonged to the Pure Humanity movement - a large, resourceful quasi religious sect that believed that the human species must never go extinct.  They still retained their trust of AI, cyborgs, uplifted animals and virtual uploads, but vowed never to become them.  Cybernetic implants were only added when necessary, not for mere "recreation".  In the late 27th century, Pure Humanity sent a large warp probe to a lifeless planet 6000 light years away, so it could be terraformed and seeded with Earth life.  Given the extraordinary success of this project, Pure Humanity planned a mass colonisation of the planet (christened "Telekos").  In the early 2900's, a massive 150 km colony ship carrying over 100 million Pure Humanity members in hibernation and thousands of sympathetic AIs left the Sol System for its new home.  (It must be noted that, by the 30th century, the Sol System is already a Kardashev Level 2 civilisation with a population in the trillions.  Everything is done on a huge scale, and everyone can afford to plan for the very long term).  They vowed to create a new, independent utopia where humans and AI could live in peace.

Starship Leviathan arrived at the planet Telekos after 30 years of warp travel.  The colonisation went  extremely well ... at first.  However, as the years passed, there were some divisions among the colonists, with humans and AIs on both sides.  This led to proxy battles involving barely sapient robotic drones.  Eventually, the humans themselves decided to get involved in the conflict directly.  After all, the "right to fight" was one of the central tenets of Pure Humanity, hence the re-establishment of a human-based military.  

Things became further complicated when the humans and AI of the Northern Block discovered something that defied all known laws of physics - a breach of reality itself that could conceivably be used as a weapon.  The 21-year-old Gabrielle was there when it happened ...

... and, 21,000 years later, she awakens inside a small starship, buried kilometres under a former research island, with no memory of how or why she got there.

After the starship AI gives her a drug boost to make her physically active, and downloads language translation files into her brain (as much as her now delicate mind could handle), she learns that she has awoken into a world where most advanced technology has been forgotten, all Humans have psionic powers, and Dragons exist.

And all her friends and family are long dead.

Understandably, she is pissed off and more than a little paranoid.
