The Cask of Amontillado by manonquinn The Cask of Amontillado by manonquinn
Just a spread I did for my Illustration class. we had to make so many illustrations for a short story/article of our choosing. I did a set of illustrations for Edgar Allen Poe's The Cask of Amontillado. I had a lot of fun working on this piece.

I knew I loved this just by the thumbnail without having any idea of what it would be. Then I saw the title.

I know he wrote so many wonderful pieces, but, to be very honest, I would love to see your take on some of Poe's other works. Your style...that stable shakiness of the characters...gives off such a chilling air when you really take the tale into account. Along with the lighting (), you really just captured everything about this relationship. Fortunato's face being so open and laughing (the mouth especially here gives me chills) and being so round and jovial versus Montresor's srunched design...and such a lovely thought with the darkened face. Like Kunasaki-san, his body language just intrigues me. A clear clenching of the shoulders at Fortunato's touch. A briskness to his step...an obvious eagerness to get to the catacombs. And yet I get the feeling that he's *listening*. You just get all these lovely details in...that cool, eager, yet almost hungry air that Montresor shows throughout the story.

And that background. Love the fountain and the thin strips of water and the buildings. I truly love the roofs here and how they compliment the bricked streets so well. Everything there just gives off a partying air...and then the two men drop in with the darkness. I honestly couldn't love this more if I tried.

By "set of illustrations," does that mean I can hope for another angle from the story? I'm so in love with this and would adore seeing more...I can just imagine what you would do for the walling scene. It invokes the terror that Poe was going for here...the colors and the whole style...the rest must be equally as phenomenal. You have such a wonderful grasps of characters. I do hope you're pursuing art in some way. You'd be an amazing cartoonist. You can go from such humor to this type of mastery of horror...you can go anywhere in my mind. It's so very rare to look at a piece here (or anywhere for that matter) without dialogue or animation boosting it and truly *feel* the terror. You've accomplished this. And you accomplished making me laugh with your other works. I hope I continue to be surprised again and again when your name pops up in my inbox.

Very nice and atmospheric lighting (you're good at that!) Its nice to see more images that are telling a story, you hardly see that on DA (probably because it takes a while haha!)
