I'd never use a cracked engine block or head, ever. Certainly not for long distances and most definitely not for racing. If it's a numbers matching restoration then you can try to use it as a once a year driver, but not as a daily driver. That's a weakness that will definitely fail. It's not a matter of if, but when. The factories weld cast iron, but nobody outside factories has that level of experience anymore, by and large. Anybody suggesting otherwise is usually a wishful thinker who knows it's possible but hasn't ever done it themselves. Again, welding cast iron anything else is extremely okay, but NOT for an engine. If it's a rare engine part most engine mechanics won't even touch it for under $25,000 for one reason - so WHEN it fails they can give you back part of the money and still make out on the deal. Talking from 40 years experience with highly rated national shops.
Also note, engine "cylinders" are NEVER welded, even by the factory, which is what was being discussed.
It's more practical to say, no it can't be done, unless you like throwing away money.
I can't tell how to make private notes on this website no more. Are you open to commission work? The only trouble is I do everything snail mail. Do you have a p.o. box or something to do it that way??? I think it's right up your alley (as far as the type of art). You might even recognize one or two pieces...
If you are nterested, and figure out how to private msg, shoot me a zonker...
