Mangaka-Knight

Recently I was re-watching the first episode of My Little Pony, Season 1: Episode 1 & 2 and it made me think about how dragons were viewed and treated in the pony dominated society. This also made me think of other episodes that went further into this as well as how other ponies perceived other species.

In episode 1 when Twilight was trying to past her entrance exam, a unicorn rolled in Spike's egg for Twilight to cast her magic on.

To pass the test, the unicorn in question must hatch the egg through the use of their magic. Seeing as to how this is to get into Celestia's Gifted School of the Unicorns, hatching a egg isn't a simple task for a starting unicorn. Many things could go wrong. Perhaps the spell isn't strong enough, like in Twilight's case when she first attempted to hatch Spike's egg, or perhaps the unicorn fumbles the spell and does something entirely different, like say fire a beam out of their horn, splattering that egg's yolk everywhere or was only able to finish the spell halfway. Either way, they are performing magic on creatures for a grade and you can't say that the unicorns didn't know that it was a dragon's egg. There is a picture of what that egg is on the cart, so they know and have been using dragon eggs for grading tests. What if Spike's egg accidentally rolled off the cart and smashed on that floor? I'm guessing they would just simply go get another dragon egg from the back. To ponies, dragon eggs are in the same category as a common chicken egg.

In the episode Dragon Quest (Season 2, Episode 21) when Spike wanted to learn more about himself and where he came from, Twilight and Spike do a late night reading session to see what information they could find about dragons and to Twilight's shock, there wasn't any information on them because, according to Twilight,

"Dragons are too rare and scary to talk to or to study." 

And earlier in that same episode, when Spike asked Twilight where he came from, Twilight tells him that she doesn't know who found him or where they found him. She most likely asked Princess Celestia and that was the answer Twilight received. I believe that Celestia is either lying or is omitting details due to shame or guilt over the fact that dragon eggs were used in such inhumane ways.

Just think about it. When Spike met Fluttershy for the first time, she was surprised and excited to meet a baby dragon and was even shocked to learn that Spike could talk.

I would assume that this was the same reaction many ponies in Canterlot had when Spike became of talking age and the more they interacted with Spike, the more they started to realize that dragons weren't these feral beasts who roams around, eat gems and just cause destruction. There is sentience to them and Celestia took notice of this which caused her to make changes to how ponies perceived dragons and to stop the practice of using dragon eggs for grading.

Overall, in this pony lead society, dragons weren't seen in the same class as other species, not even sentient, until Spike was born and raised by ponies. While the Dragon Migration, Garble and the other dragons from "Dragon Quest" gave some very interesting information dragon kind, it also put them in a bad light which doesn't help the fact that before this and Spike, dragons were viewed as monsters. I would have loved to have seen Celestia and her subject's reaction while they watch Spike grow through the years and eventually starts talking.
