Material Design Cursors by Manga737 Material Design Cursors by Manga737
I couldn't find anything like this no mater where I looked, so I decided I'd make my own material themed cursor set, I will probably be porting them to Linux as well. *UPDATE* The .zip now contains a "linux" folder containing these cursors for linux! I don't currently have a machine running Linux, so I won't be able to test any of them, so if you try them out, let me know how they work for you!

I'm not super happy with how they all turned out, it's very difficult to balance the aesthetic of Material design, with usability. The .zip for these cursors includes the folder of depreciated cursors (my old versions, that I'm not terribly fond of) so you're welcome to look through all the other cursors I designed around material design. I will likely update this to include cursors that have tails, one of the things I feel like fits the material design the least is the shape of the primary cursor, but I've not yet figured out what I think would be better, so I'll be experimenting with the cursor tails among other things, and trying to figure out something I think is better.

My design pulled from Chrome OS's use of black cursors, with white outlines, then I chose to make the base color gray, rather than black, since "material" seems to very rarely be black. The white outline makes it visible on dark backgrounds, and the shadow makes the white outline visible on light backgrounds. The link select, unavailable, move, handwriting, info/help, and resize cursors used Google's material design system icons (www.google.com/design/icons/) and the loading cursors both use this animation, although somewhat modified to have significantly fewer frames: five.agency/wp-content/uploads…
These cursors were created with RW cursor editor (www.rw-designer.com/cursor-mak…) and Inkscape (inkscape.org/en/)

Feedback and suggestions are welcome and appreciated!~

So um, feedback!
The thing is amazing. I can't thank you enough.

I decided to go with the coloured teal cursor instead of the hand (I find the finger strangely long) - took me a while to get used to it but it works fine. Maybe you could consider going with one of the accent colours from the material palette - compared to its normal colour, I think there is too small of a contrast change. Like, I need to pay attention to the cursor to see that there's a link below, but I don't wanna use the pointing finger.

I love the raspberry circle. Great approach. Although I still find the animation not-so-material - a bit too jaggered for my taste. I'd make it have more of a sudden start, but then a smoother slowdown. A logarithmic curve.

And I have a single strong suggestion: that you could make the diagonal resizing arrows the same size as vertihorizontal ones. I think it's the biggest inconsistency in this set; it really looks odd to me.

Thanks again and keep up the good work.

Hey, I'm SUPER glad you like them!

Also, I have some suck-ey news, I'm really sorry, but I probably won't be working on these in the near future, a lot of stuff happened in my personal life, and I was away from deviantart for a pretty long time, during which I migrated to Linux, and even now I can't invest time into my side projects, because my life is still kind of upside down.  I feel like an asshole having to say that, but I'm not going to lie and say something that isn't true.

If you care about what happened, I suggest you read my post on the subject from like five minutes ago: manga737.deviantart.com/journa…
I'm trying to patch up all the holes I left behind with people asking questions after I kind of digitally fell off the face of the earth, but all that being said, I do have an update left over that I didn't post before I migrated, that I plan to post if I still have it, if you're interested, see the appropriate section of the above post for more details, the situation is kind of complicated.

other stuff:

That's a good point about the color, I made that one before the set was really starting to come together, and it could use some work. If you're into that sort of thing, it wouldn't be hard to change that color yourself with realworld cursor editor, which is a super easy program to use. If you'd like help with something like that, let me know and I can try to help (though keep in mind I'm not on deviant art much, so me checking comments, replies, etc, will be rather infrequent)

I'm glad you like the raspberry circle, the animation wasn't made by me, I found it while looking for an animation to use, and I had planned to use a spinner, but removing the background from them was borderline impossible, so I actually ended up using the dot thing out of necessity, it was the only decent thing I could find. I'd have loved to make a better animation, or even a handful of them for variety, but I'm inexperienced with motion graphics (trying to get my graphics drivers working, so that I could use blender to learn how to do motion graphics was actually what broke my windows 10 installation the first time, and eventually led to me moving to linux)

Thank you for the kind words and input, I genuinely do appreciate it, and I'm terribly sorry that all this happened the way it did.

if you are using windows, extract the files, and copy them to: C:\Windows\Cursors (this assumes your primary drive is C)
Then, to select the cursors, go open the windows control panel, and go to the "mouse" entry. Go to the "pointers tab" and you can change each default windows cursor by double clicking it, and then picking the cursor file you would like to use instead. Once you have made whatever changes you want to make, or even if yo just want to see what the cursors you've already picked look like, click apply.

Let me know if you need any more help at all, and I'd be happy to give you a hand!

Hey, I just wanted to let you kno wI'm actually thinking that I'm going to go back through ad update all of these, and I hope to be doing them in windows' muti-resolution format~
I need to play with some stuff on my desktop I'll be using for testing to work out how I'll need to scale things and whatnot, but I'm hoping to get started this afternoon.

I also hope to refresh and improve the design, and make some of the cursors I don't like as much feel more material, as well as provide more variants~

Let me know if you have any input or suggestions for improvement!

I'm really happy to hear that you like them so much! I may make a high-res version in the future, but as my computer uses the standard 32x32 size cursors, regardless of it's high DPI display, I'm not entirely sure how I'd go about it. That being said, I'll make sure I message you if I do in fact make a higher resolution version~

I think that should be pretty doable, what resolution is your display, and what OS are you running, Windows, or Linux? also, do you have any input on how much smaller you think they should be?

I'm using Win 8.1 at 1920x1200.  About the same size as the default cursors i'd say.  You can leave the "loading bubble" the same size tho I'd think.  Also i will make you an *.inf installer if you can do this.  :)

Also maybe make the white outline a little thinner in general.  It's only there to prevent the cursor from being lost over a black screen correct?

could you link me a pack of cursors that is a good size for you? I'm running win 10 and I've actually replaced a bunch of the system cursors so that when I'm not signed in it defaults to my custom ones.

So I'm not sure if I'll be able to make the outline thinner or keep the loading bubble the same size.
The loading bubble will be hard not to change, just because in order to change the size I have to go through every frame of each cursor and make them smaller, selecting only a particular portion of that cursor and shrinking it wouldn't be too complicated, except that I can't capture the primary cursor in a rectangle selection, so I have to use the lasso tool or something similar to trace around it, which would have to happen on every frame. The outline should be better once I shrink the cursors, but with some of them I added the outline before I even imported them into the cursor editor, which means I'd be remaking them from scratch, and the other issue is that with anti aliasing, and a shadow, if I make the outlines much thinner they won't be clear anymore, and they'll look super fuzzy/the outline, shadow, and body of the cursor will all blend together. Sorry, wish I could do a bit more for you there, but we'll see.

Hey, I've updated the download so that the cursors should work on Linux now (there's a folder dedicated to Linux versions of the cursors that aren't in the depreciated folder).

I only converted one of the depreciated cursors, the spinner, since you mentioned it specifically (i'm not super fond of that one however, since I couldn't find a transparent version of the animation, so I had to remove the background which resulted in a little bit of a white tinge to the outer edge of the cursor that makes it look pretty marginal on dark backgrounds), if you'd like me to convert any other ones from the depreciated folder, feel free to let me know and I'll save them in the Linux format.

Let me know how they work for you, I have no way of testing them so I don't really know what to expect, but hopefully they work fine~

By the way, I looked at your page and I love your gnome theme! is there any chance you'll be sharing the theme in the near future? I'd absolutely love to use it for when I dual boot my old desktop!

Hi,i tried it last night and it broke the session,so i had to replace it with a recovery disk :)
may be there are some issues with naming? cuz there's a different naming policy in linux. you can look at this cursor theme if you need some reference,
gnome-look.org/content/show.ph…  (And it's original work which is for windows is here, jj-ying.deviantart.com/art/Aze… )
Thanks for working on this and i'd really love to use it on my lap

And about my gnome theme, it's not really finished yet and i couldn't work on that for few weeks because of my college work. anyway i will make it available for downloading & will let you know soon if you need to :)

Okay, I'm working with a group of people to make them work on linux, they told me it's an issue with naming/symlinks, because I have no real way of testing it I'm planning on probably letting them get them working on linux, but I'll take a look and see if I can get it resolved, Thank you for the feedback, like I said, I have no way of testing them right now. That being said, they're now posted on GitHub.  (there's a Linux branch, hopefully they'll be fully functional soon~)

and no rush, I can't wait to see it completed though, it's by far the most attractive gnome theme I've seen, keep up the incredible work!

I currently don't have a machine running linux, but I should in the near future, that being said, because I don't run linux I don't know a ton about customization on linux platforms outside of what I've read about with DE's and widgets in preparation for dual booting, but it would seem that cursors in linux are Xcursors, so I'll be converting them to that format and re-uploading them~
and I had the exact same issue with looking for material design cursors, I found one set that uses the spinner quite well, but the spinner is on a background, and is off center, and that bothered me endlessly so I decided to make my own.
I'll reply again and let you know when I've made them available as Xcursors~

Would you consider including an inverted colors version of the main cursor?  Swapping colors such that there is a gray interior and dark outline?  I would like to use this set but I can't stand the hand cursor for links (not just in this set but any cursor set) so I usually use a reverse colored clone of the main cursor whenever possible.  Just a request if you plan to spend any more time on this set.  Apart from my personal bugaboo I like the set!

Absolutely~ that's an easy request to fill, though I'l probably make a couple of alternate link select cursors, I had wanted to make an inverted color set, but what I found was that with the shadow, the outline just looked fuzzy, and it might be odd to have it switch from having a shadow, to not having one whenever your cursor goes over a link, so I'll probably make one as you requested, as well as some colored ones you can use if you'd like, there happens to be one in the depreciated folder, but I'm not sure if it has the same dimensions and qualities, but that aside, yeah, absolutely, that's an easy request to fill
