Hey guys, I know that I haven't updated in a while, and that I haven't been on DeviantArt much. Since October, I've been focusing a lot more on writing my story. What I usually do is after I write a section, I take a break, do some art, and then start the next section. But for this draft, I just feel really impatient, and I want to get it done. Part of it is because this is the first draft that I'm letting other people read, and I want a completely copy to show them. Another is that after I have this draft, I feel like I'll have better ideas for concept art. A lot of the drawings I did of my OCs are now outdated, and I don't want to keep producing something that would eventually be unusable.

Anyway, I just wanted to write this journal to let you know that I'm still active, and that I am actively working on something. Currently, art is taking a backseat to writing, but eventually I'll get back to making art. I'm really excited for DeviantART Eclipse. Did you guys check the notification for it? It looks cool! I hope that by the time it rolls out for everyone, I'd have better art to accompany the new and improved DA look XD.

Anyway, I feel I'm being a little unfair by talking about my writing and not sharing any info. Many of you who follow me probably already know that a lot of the original artwork I produced are related to the story I'm writing. For those of you who are interested, I started putting up polished chapters on BetaBooks. BetaBooks is a beta reading platform that allows authors to share their works with a few readers to get early feedback. Here's a link to read my book there; you'll have to sign up on the platform, but it's completely free for readers!

I still don't have a title, so yeah, it'll take you to a page that says "Untitled" T__T. I'm hoping that beta readers can help me come up with one. But here's some info from my Tumblr to see if you're interested or not.

What’s it about?

Sano dreams to explore the world and to be a hero, which is a little difficult considering nobody’s supposed to know he exists. When his mother leaves him for a few days, a careless display of magic catapults Sano out of his reclusion, and he finds himself pursued by the king’s warriors. Thrust into the world he knows next to nothing about, aided only by a superstitious girl who wants stronger magic, he must find a way to reunite with his mother.

But it’s a dangerous time to be a fugitive in the Kingdom of Dayung. Friction among the regions is getting palpable. A shameful, shadowy past is creeping back to haunt its people. The greedy, ruthless king is desperate to eliminate any threats to his power. And to top it all, a mysterious wind is plaguing the kingdom, turning all wrongdoers into wood.

As Sano navigates the world for the first time, he must make choices that challenge his dreams and force him to confront what it truly means to be a part of the world.

What’s it called?

I don’t know! T__T I’m hoping some of my beta readers will help me brainstorm a title.

But is there anything interesting in it?

Okay, themes that it explores:

  • family, friendship, community
  • languages
  • erasure of history
  • importance of stories

Um, what else? Oh, the protagonists fall under the red oni, blue oni trope, which personally, I quite like.

Oh! It has a magic system based on programming. (‘Cuz that’s the only magic I know, haha)

And the world is inspired by precolonial Philippines! I really hate to make it seem like I want cookie points for that, but on the other hand, if you’re interested in seeing a different culture in a fantasy setting, well, here’s a story for ya. Also, I spent a lot of time doing research so if you can provide guidance on that regard, I will honour you forever.

Are there things you should be wary of?

This story is meant to be MG-level. Violence is kept to a minimum; no gory details. No romance maybe if you squint. There’s polytheism and animism, so a warning if that’s not something you’re comfortable seeing.

So there ya go! Please feel free to check it out. If you find that it's not your cup of tea, that's totally okay, you can back out of beta reading (not sure yet if you'll have to let me know so I can take you off the list; I only have 20 spots open for readers, but I would never hold it against you if you do come back and tell me you don't want to beta read anymore.) Um, um, um, what else? I don't think there's much else. Maybe that I'll be occupied with this story for the remainder of the year, that's all. I'll be back hopefully with more regular updates at the beginning of 2019. Gah, I can't believe we're already talking about 2019.

Cry Cry Sorry for the long absence!!!

I'm so busy in RL lately, and I'm in the process of editing my story, that artworks had fallen off on the wayside. Anyway, I've always wanted to do one of these, but it took me forever to actually compile it!

I know, I know, I cited Wikipedia, but I don't own a physical copy of Boxer Codex (extremely rare book), and the images on Wikipedia are good enough to be referenced.

I hope you find this helpful at best, entertaining at worst. If any of you have additional information, or wish to correct something, please just let me know! I'm so hungry for resources! i want more more MORE v2

Mermay
I completely forgot to post this here! It was "Mermay" month over at Tumblr back in May, and I did this as a little nod to the precolonial Visayan warrior. People were trying all sorts of combinations of humans and sea creatures, so I thought, hey, why not incorporate something a little more traditional?

Hermit House
I finished going through Nathan Fowke's Environmental Design course in Schoolism. I still plan on going back and looking at the other student's work, but in the meantime, because I don't have time to do each assignment, I figure I just try a small piece in which I combine all of the things I learned from each lecture.

I always keep a list of things I want to draw from my story, and this time I chose my protagonist's home in the forest, which is really just a small, out of the way nipa hut where he and his mother hide. I wanted it to evoke a feeling like "a small place of warmth in a lonely, forgotten place," but I think I didn't quite achieve that. It looked more... impactful in my head, haha. I thought greens and purples would make a great palette, but after I started mixing them up, I ended up with something like a dull grey, so the picture looks flat now.

Oh well, I thought it was good practice anyway. I'm the sort of person who rarely ever draws anything other than a face, so I should really push myself out of my comfort zone.

Oh I see. Unfortunately as I'm also working and going to school, I don't think I would have time for it. Thanks for asking though!
