A letter to 6 year old Julia in Kansas

The Great Divide
Good morning Julia.
I'm sitting here in the cool dawn, sipping a cup off coffee, listening to the chickens crow and being heckled unmercifully by the blacks for favors. The two polish roosters, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, are beginning to try their hands at crowing without notable success. They tend to be off on their time and they cut the crowing short of the ur-ur-urrrrr of the more mature birds.
The silkies are bullying the blacks away from the tidbits of apple and the two potatoes I've thrown to them, while the guineas are dominating one of the potatoes entirely, gathered around it with focus. Lady MacBeth and the well-coifed little red Cornish hen are struggling to establish their rightful place in chicken society, coming closer now and competing with some enthusiasm for bits of food.
The summer's about run out of grasshoppers and bugs, even if the chickens hadn't cleaned them out a long time

A Y2K Survivor part 1
Reflections of a Y2K Survivor
"Better carry it around to fill in between those two cedars." I studied the rock barrier extending along the driveway. Kenneth and I stood together recovering our wind in the clean, weak atmosphere of the continental divide. "A person who doesn't care about his paint could drive between those trees and end up behind the cabin where you couldn't see him."
Kenneth looked at the scuffs and holes in the new leather gloves and shrugged. We were putting the finishing touches on a system to discourage rowdiness on the part of the uninvited visitors we expected to arrive in a few days. Y2K was almost here.
Still breathing hard, I allowed my eyes to examine Kenneth again, wondering how he would stand up to the hardships I believed would assail him over the next few months. He was a serious, capable, intelligent young man of two decades. For the thousandth time I silently thanked the powers of the universe that I had him and his family for neighbors.

Tree of Life in the Sky by patrx Tree of Life in the Sky :iconpatrx:patrx 3 6

I got away from updating here for a while because I broke my arm and had surgery on it. Thankfully, not my drawing hand! But I've been preoccupied with updating my blog, drawing new things, and physical therapy. Now that my day job has started again, and I'm working two jobs, I'll try to post an update here every month. For more frequent news, check out

I'll have a display of some of my larger works at the Lackman Branch of the Johnson County Library in Lenexa, KS during August. Stop by if you're in the area and check out the magazine room!

I have continued working on very small items, ornament sized, and I've mounted several of them to sell on Etsy. My Etsy shop is here:…. You'll also find the jewelry listings, and in the future I'll probably expand the store to include some items from my collection of vintage ephemera.

Thanks for taking a look! You can always get in touch with me and give me suggestions at
