Meet Min Crane, an alchemist in a story I have an idea for, involving a school for witches. In my story, there are many different types of magic, and many schools devoted to teaching young witches how to control their magic and how to use it to be productive members of society (an urban magic society). Students of an elite school (yet to be named), all take the same basic classes together (history, math, science classes, etc.) and they take specialized classes separately; the alchemists take alchemy classes (a study of symbols, transmutation classes, a study of periodic elements, various advanced science courses, etc.), the necromancer take necromancy classes (study of ancient tomes, differences between types of undead, reanimation vs resurrection theory, soul imbuing, etc.), summoners take summoner classes (you get the idea), etc.
Min comes from a long line of Alchemists, all of whom are very respected. She is expected to become a powerful and respectable alchemist, but that’s not what she wants. Min thinks her family and their traditions are too old fashioned and stingy for her. She wants to have fun and be a little wild. Min has a scientific mind and is often the person her friends turn to when they need a problem solved, but they do not turn to her for advice, as she will ultimately lead them astray for an act of rebellion or two.
