Yes, photos - I'm almost 50 and this Casio Exilim EX-Z2300 is the first real camera I've ever owned (discounting the Kodak instamatic that worked for around 2 months in the 70's).

Got this one at the Gadget Show Exhibition in Birmingham in around May?? 2011, didn't go there with the intention of buying anything but couldn't resist - price £97 inc. 4GB card ;)

Camera drawbacks - not great on anti-shake or in low light conditions, otherwise excellent !

Hi all,

The BMFAC contest results are out:

www.fractalartcontests.com/201…

This year's entries were in my opinion yet again an improvement on previous years however I'm a little disappointed that few of the 3D entries even came close to the best 3D Fractal Art you can see on DA or at www.fractalforums.com/ so I hope next BMFAC (whenever it is) there will be a lot more 3D work submitted.
I'm also again disappointed at the shortage of good Apophysis, Incendia or Xenodream entries.

Thanks for the birthday wishes.
Now I have to go get some new jeans with my birthday money as 2 pairs just became unusable (broken fly, large knee-hole) - well I think both pairs were more than 15 years old ;)
I hope to finish "i.Candy" for OSX this week (x86 Leopard and higher I think, though may require Snow Leopard).
Also I've managed to get a fairly good version of the "Diamond-Square" landscape/fBm/plasma algorithm working in shader 2 for Apple systems, so some sort of planet-based game is possible in the near future at least on OSX if not iOS.
Also soon I should have a little more spare time to get on with a shader fractal program based on Ultra Fractal but with more flexibility with respect to random screen access rendering - though that bit may not actually use the GPU shader ;)

I am still developing my wip 3D formula while at the same time doing my best to write a comprehensive suite of raytracing classes for UF5+ but haven't enough spare time to get it done as quickly as I would like.

On a plus note in the recent Helfa Gelf art exhibition at Theatre Clwyd (that's *the premiere* North Wales theatre) I had 3 giclée on canvas prints on display and one has sold (for £195) so I'm quite pleased, though after the Theatre's 30% it still doesn't cover having all 3 prints done.

Well it went a little better than last year in the end.
Overall I sold around 50 postcards but no prints.
Quite a few of the visitors I had came because of a local leaflet drop I did after getting no visitors on the first weekend - in fact these worked better for me than the "official" HG leaflets so I'll be doing something similar at least a week in advance of HG next year.

Now I'm back to concentrating on producing ray-tracing classes for Ultra Fractal.

Hi all, I'm taking part in the Helfa Gelf (Art Trail) Open Studio event again this year - it's taking place in September and there are Artists/Craftspeople participating from many differnt genres in Conwy, Flintshire, Denbighshire and Gwynedd (that's North Wales, UK for those who don't know).

Please come and visit if you can - watch and talk to the Artists at work and learn a lot about many different Arts/Crafts directly from the "horses mouth", including of course Fractal Art if you visit my "studio" ;)

Full details are here:

www.helfagelf.org/

The Helfa Gelf site will be updated from time to time.

I hope some of you can make it so I'll meet you in September :)

I'd especially love to meet some more Fractal Artists as I did in a previous year (but everyone is welcome).

Well the open studio event "Helfa Gelf" is over for another year. I was somewhat disappointed with the number of visitors but the nearby roadworks and diversion at the end of our road probably didn't help, plus the weather wasn't great.

Anyway as I said previously, my "studio" is always open by appointment so anyone interested in visiting please just get in touch:

01492 540855 if in the UK
+44 1492 540855 if elsewhere

Or use Skype: makinmagic1
Or just note me through DeviantArt
Or E-mail me on: makinmagic@tiscali.co.uk

Hi all,

Edit:
--------------------
For anyone who's visiting North Wales in August, September and October - from around August 9th into September don't miss the exhibition on Colwyn Bay pier - there are local artists exhibiting from many disciplines of Visual Art (including myself).
--------------------
Unfortunately the pier has had to close due to financial circumstances so there's now no exhibition there :(
Instead please do come visit the studios of the artists participating in Helfa Gelf (Art Trail):

On the last weekend in September and the first two in October Helfa Gelf is on again, this time encompassing Conwy, Denbighshire and Flintshire, see:

(edit - link below is corrected to the updated website)

www.helfagelf.org/

There are many artist's studios to visit.
Hope to see you then.

Please note that my own "studio" is now open to visitors anytime by arrangement - if wanting to arrange a visit just call 01492 540855 if in the UK or +44 1492 540855 if elsewhere - or use Skype to contact me - "makinmagic1" - or note me in DeviantArt - or E-mail me at makinmagic@tiscali.co.uk

I recently found out about Thelma losing her daughter thelma1.deviantart.com/
My most fervent sympathy and support goes to Thelma and the rest of her family.
I'm also posting this in the journal so any folks using hard drugs or thinking of doing so will take a lesson from Thelma's before and after pictures of her daughter:

I have deliberately favourited the pics in the hope that as many folks as possible will see them and take heed.

You must read this if you create art, or even if you take family snapshots.
In particular read it if you are in the US - but if they do it, then what ?

After you've read it post it in your journal or somewhere else prominent if you're also concerned !

Hi all,

I got a DD !!

"Sierpinski Temple detail"

Thanks to monochromatic-stains.deviantar… for suggesting it and to sophquest.deviantart.com/ for featuring it.

If you look it's generated a large number of views :)

I'm currently deciding where to go next with the 3D IFS, the current version of the formula was not written as well as it could have been - I was going to add reflections but instead I'm going to work on a new better version of the formula - most of the improvements I've thought of would be near impossible to impliment in the current formula without breaking backward compatibility.

Also I now have a new website:

Hi all,

Well the Helfa Gelf "open studio" event is over. It was a little disappointing this year but I did sell several sample CDs and three prints. I wasn't the only one who had fewer visitors than hoped for.

I have now decided that my "studio" is open to visitors all the time but by appointment only - so if anyone's going to be in North Wales and would like to visit then just get in touch to arrange the details.

Just redoing this journal entry as the Helfa Gelf 2007 website is now up:

www.helfagelf.org/

Helfa Gelf is an "Open Studio" event from 29th September to 14th October being held for artists in County Conwy and Denbighshire and I'm taking part.

So anyone who could visit North Wales during the two week period is warmly invited to come and visit my "studio"

It's not just myself and fractals you can see, there are artists' studios to see from just about all varieties of the Visual Arts.

Anyone interested please send an Email to post@helfagelf.org giving your postal address and asking to be sent a Helfa Gelf brochure which gives details of the participating artists, locations, opening times etc.

BTW "Helfa Gelf" means Art Hunt. (It's Welsh)

Look forward to seeing you !

Hi again,

Well I got the escape-time 3D RIFS up and running but it wasn't the magic bullet I was hoping for in terms of render speed, in fact it's probably slower than Xenodream at rendering a "whole" 3D IFS fractal and the Ultrafractal previews couldn't be described as "real-time".
Having said that however I believe it does provide the possibility of zooming into 3D fractals in a way that's prohibitive with the normal chaos game or deterministic methods - in fact I've done a render of a zoom into a view of the Menger Sponge to the point where you can see the 9th level holes - these are in fact 3^-9 units in size if the full Menger sponge is 1 unit per side - I've a suspicion that you wouldn't even consider trying that using the other rendering methods (I should add that it did take several hours, but not days).
I'm just about to post some 3D RIFS images in my scraps so look there for an image of the full Menger Sponge and the zoomed in version - note that the big square hole centre-stage in the zoomed in version is one of the tiny dots on the full sponge which are 3^-5 units per side (you can see them in the full version if you magnify it).
I'm still working on the 3D RIFS formula so am not even releasing a beta version yet.

bye
Dave
